What healthcare storage solutions actually have to solve
Storage failures in a hospital are rarely about square footage. They are about the distance between where inventory lives and where it is used, and about whether a stocker can see what is running out.
Every storage decision in a clinical building is a workflow decision. A supply room that looks organized can still create stockouts if par locations are not visible at a glance, if the picking sequence does not match the restock route, or if the highest-turn items sit at ankle height. Conversely, a room that looks crowded can run smoothly when the shelf pitch matches the actual carton heights and the labeling is unambiguous.
That is why we treat this as a layout problem first and a product problem second. We start from the room dimensions, the door and column locations, the ceiling height and the clearances you have to keep, then work out how many linear feet of usable storage the space can carry — and only then choose between shelving, cabinets, wall systems, carts, bins or a high-density system on floor rails. Storage that follows the workflow, not just the floor plan
The most common request we get is not “more shelving” — it is “we keep running out of things we own.” That is usually a visibility and sequencing problem.
Three changes fix most of it: put the highest-turn items in the reach band between roughly hip and shoulder height, give every location a single unambiguous label, and make the empty state obvious so a stocker can see a gap without counting. Open baskets, clear-front bins and tilt bins all do that job; solid drawers do not, which is why they belong to high-value or controlled items instead.
The second common request is floor space. When a room is full, the options are to go up the wall, go mobile on rails, or move the last 50 feet to a cart. Which one is right depends on aisle width, ceiling height and how many people need to be in the room at once.

Signals that the layout, not the product, is the problem

Finish selection is driven by the environment, not by preference. A dry supply room, a wash-down area and a walk-in cooler are three different problems. Two practical notes. First, mixing finishes within one room is normal — stainless at the sink, epoxy in the humid bay, chrome in the dry store. Second, if a room may later be converted to a wet or cold use, specify for the future use now; retrofitting a finish means replacing the unit.
Sizing and configuration guidance
The information below is what we need to produce a layout and an accurate quote. It is also, deliberately, the same information the manufacturer’s design team asks for, so nothing has to be gathered twice.
- Room dimensions (length × width), with door locations and door clearances
- Column locations and ceiling height, plus anything overhead you cannot move
- For shelving: number of shelf tiers, post height, stationary or mobile
- For bins: sizes, and whether they sit on shelving or on wall-mounted panels
- What is stored now, roughly how much of it, and what turns fastest
- Who restocks, how often, and from which direction they enter the room

Shelf pitch and reach
Usable capacity is set by shelf pitch, not by the number of shelves. Measure the tallest carton you actually store, add clearance for hands, and set the pitch from that; a unit with six tightly spaced shelves that cannot hold your cartons stores less than a four-shelf unit that can. Put fast-moving items in the middle reach band, slow-moving and light overflow above, and heavy or bulk items low.
Stationary, mobile, or wall-mounted
Stationary is the default: cheapest, simplest, no rails, no moving parts. Choose it whenever the room has spare floor area.
High-density mobile on floor rails removes fixed aisles and typically converts most of that aisle area into storage. Wall-mounted systems recover floor area in small rooms and keep the floor clear for cleaning, but need a wall that can take the load and a mounting detail agreed with facilities.

Costs of getting it wrong are asymmetric: an under-specified stationary run can be extended later, but a mobile system installed on the wrong rail layout is expensive to correct. That is the main reason we push for a layout review before an order.
