Laboratory Safety Cabinets — Compliant Chemical & Biological Storage

Safety cabinets protect lab workers, facilities, and the environment from hazardous materials. OSHA, NFPA, EPA, DEA, and CDC regulations each dictate specific cabinet requirements for different hazard classes — flammable liquids, corrosive acids/bases, biological agents, controlled substances, and general chemicals all need purpose-built storage.

Labs USA supplies safety cabinets from multiple manufacturers with the certifications and features your compliance program requires. We help you select the right cabinet type, size, and configuration — and coordinate placement within your casework layout for optimal workflow and code compliance.

Regulatory Requirements at a Glance

Hazard Regulation Cabinet Requirement
Flammable liquids OSHA 29 CFR 1910.106, NFPA 30 FM-approved flammable storage cabinet
Corrosive acids/bases OSHA, state fire code Acid/corrosive cabinet (poly-lined or PP)
Biological agents CDC/NIH BMBL, OSHA Biosafety cabinet (Class I/II/III)
Controlled substances DEA 21 CFR 1301.71–76 DEA-compliant locked cabinet
General chemicals OSHA, institutional policy Ventilated chemical storage

Frequently Asked Questions

How many flammable storage cabinets do I need?

NFPA 30 and local fire codes limit the quantity of flammable liquids per cabinet (typically 60 gallons for a standard cabinet) and the number of cabinets per fire area. Labs USA helps you calculate your storage requirements based on your chemical inventory and local fire code.

Can acids and bases be stored in the same cabinet?

No. Acids and bases must be stored separately — either in different cabinets or in a cabinet with separate compartments. Mixing acids and bases in the same space creates dangerous reaction risks. Labs USA specifies dual-compartment cabinets when both acid and base storage are needed in the same location.

Do safety cabinets need ventilation?

Flammable cabinets: ventilation is optional per NFPA 30 but recommended. If vented, they must connect to a dedicated exhaust system (not the fume hood). Acid cabinets: ventilation is strongly recommended to remove corrosive vapors. Biosafety cabinets: ventilation depends on the class and type.
