What We Need to Quote Your Casework
Casework is the one product line where the quote genuinely depends on the drawing. A cabinet is not a catalogue item that ships in a fixed configuration; a casework run is a fitted assembly that has to match a room, its utilities and its doors. These are the inputs that let us price it properly the first time.
- A floor plan with dimensions. CAD or PDF is ideal; a dimensioned sketch works. Room length and width, door and window positions, and anything fixed that the casework has to work around.
- Elevations, if they exist. They settle wall cabinet heights, backsplash and reagent shelf positions, and whether anything conflicts with services.
- Where the utilities land. Water, drain, gas, vacuum and electrical. Sink positions and service chases are driven by the utility rough-in, not the other way around.
- What work happens at each bench. It decides the work surface, the sink type and whether acid or flammable storage belongs underneath.
- Existing casework, if you are matching or extending. Photos of the cabinet face, door style and finish.
- Site access and schedule. Dock or no dock, elevator or stairs, and the date the room has to be usable.
Send those and the quote comes back itemised, with freight and installation as separate lines so you can see exactly what is in scope.
Shop Drawings and the Submittal Process
The step that surprises buyers most is the approval cycle, because it sits between the purchase order and the start of production. Understanding it is the difference between a delivery date that holds and one that slips without anyone deciding to let it slip.

How to protect the date
- Circulate the drawings to everyone who has an opinion at once rather than in sequence.
- Batch comments into one mark-up per round; two consolidated rounds beat five partial ones.
- Flag layout changes as soon as you know about them. A minor change raised early is usually absorbed without reopening an approved package; the same change raised late is a revision cycle.
- Decide finishes and colours before approval, not after: a custom colour can add lead time even when it adds little cost.
If your project has a fixed occupancy date, say so at quote stage. It changes how we sequence drawings and what we recommend on finishes.
Quote Scope and the Parts People Forget
Two quotes for the same room can look very different because of what is in them rather than what the cabinets cost. Check these lines first.
- Freight — delivered to dock, to the room, or shipped freight collect on your own account. All three are normal; they are not interchangeable.
- Installation — quoted separately, and often performed by the site’s own trades on smaller projects. Where a general contractor is involved, the scope split has to be explicit.
- Demolition and disposal — removing existing casework is its own line, and it affects the schedule as much as the price.
- Work surfaces — often priced separately from the cabinets, so a comparison has to include them on both sides.
- Completion components — filler panels, knee space enclosures, corner units, backsplashes, service chases and end panels. Individually small, collectively significant, and the most common cause of a late supplementary order.
- Fume hoods and equipment — usually a separate scope from casework even when they sit in the same run; the base cabinet under a hood is casework, the hood is not.
- Tax and terms — tax exempt status, net terms and milestone billing where applicable.

What do you need from me to quote laboratory casework?

Can you match casework we already have?
Usually, and the sooner we know, the better the match. Send a photo of the existing cabinet face, the door and drawer style, and the finish. Matching an existing line on a renovation is straightforward when it is part of the specification and awkward when it is discovered at installation.
