Wire, solid, stainless or polymer: how the choice is actually made
Shelving is chosen on three things: what the environment does to the material, what the packaging needs from the surface, and how heavy the load is. Everything else is preference.
Environment first. A dry supply room and a walk-in cooler are different problems. The manufacturer publishes an application table for exactly this: chrome and galvanised finishes for dry storage only, epoxy finishes and all-polymer rated for wet and cooler conditions, stainless where the cleaning chemistry is aggressive. Specifying chrome into a room that gets washed down is the single most common and most expensive mistake we are asked to correct.
Then the surface. Open wire lets air move and light through, so labels stay readable and dust does not collect on a flat plane; it is the default for packaged supplies. Solid shelves and inlay mats stop small items tipping through and give a wipeable surface. Vented polymer plates sit between the two — an open grid you can lift out and wash. The manufacturer describes the polymer plates as removable and dishwasher safe.
Then the load. The published figures below are per shelf, evenly distributed, which is the number that matters when someone stacks a full case of fluids in one corner. If your loads are concentrated rather than even, tell us — it changes shelf pitch and post spacing, not just the platform.
The five shelving platforms
These are the manufacturer’s platforms, published side by side. Any of them can be built as a stationary unit, a mobile unit on casters, or a bank on a high-density track system.

Shelving is bought as posts plus shelves, so a run is sized in three independent decisions — depth, length and post height. The manufacturer’s published ranges differ slightly by platform:

How we turn that into a layout
Depth is a workflow decision before it is a capacity decision. Anything deeper than about 21 inches on a high-turn location means reaching over the front row, so the back row stops being used and the room quietly loses the capacity you paid for. Deep shelves belong to bulk and slow movers.
Shelf pitch is where most usable capacity is won or lost. Set it from the actual carton heights rather than dividing the post height by the number of shelves. Four well-pitched shelves usually beat five badly pitched ones, and it is normal for the pitch to vary up a single unit.
Post height is limited by ceiling, sprinkler and reach constraints that your own facility sets — we design to the clearances your team gives us. Where a run has to grow later, posts can be joined with couplers and starter units extended with add-on kits, so a first phase does not have to be replaced.

- Measure the room, the door swing and the columns before choosing depth
- Set shelf pitch from carton heights, and expect to vary it within a unit
- Keep the highest-turn locations in the band between hip and shoulder height
- Plan the aisle for two people passing where restocking overlaps clinical use
- Decide up front whether the run will be extended, so posts and kits match
Accessories that change how a run works
The platform is rarely the interesting part of a specification. These are the parts that decide whether a store room works:

Millenia polymer shelving in more detail
The all-polymer platform is the one people ask about most, because it changes two things at once: there is no coated steel to fail in a wet room, and the shelf plates lift out to be washed. The manufacturer publishes it for healthcare storage, walk-in coolers and food service, in dry, humid and wet applications, and describes it as patent pending.
Published construction: pultruded beams in a glass-fibre and thermoset resin composite, reinforced nylon connectors, adjustable feet and shelf conus, and polypropylene shelf plates in vented or solid form. Depths of 18, 21 and 24 inches, lengths from 24 to 72 inches, post heights from 14 to 96 inches. Load capacity is published as 1,000 lb per shelf and 2,000 lb per unit, evenly distributed, with a reinforcement dunnage stand recommended for units with 54 inch and longer shelves.
Units can be stationary or mobile, and add-on units extend a run side to side or turn it into an L or a U — which is how a small room gets more usable face without a wider aisle.

Once a room is at capacity, more shelving is not the answer — removing aisles is. The same shelving units mount on floor rails or a sliding and overhead track system so that several banks share one working aisle, which typically recovers the floor area of every aisle you delete.
