Wall mounted medical storage is how a room gains storage without giving up floor. Exam rooms, substerile spaces, med rooms and utility closets almost always have usable wall above the work surface and behind the door — and the ceiling-to-floor cost of using it is a set of brackets. Floor space is clinical space — walls are storage space

Every cart parked in an exam room and every shelving unit squeezed beside a door is floor the room was not designed to give up. Wall systems move the same supplies up and out of the traffic path.

The rooms that benefit most are the small ones: exam and treatment rooms, substerile rooms between ORs, medication rooms, EVS and utility closets, and any workstation where supplies currently sit on the bench. In new construction the argument is stronger still — a wall programme decided before casework is fixed costs almost nothing, which is why our storage planning for new construction page treats wall elevations as part of the room design, not an afterthought.

Louvered panels: bins on the wall

Louvered panels are the standard way to hang bins. Quantum’s current pages describe panels formed from heavy-duty 16 gauge cold rolled steel with a gray or beige baked-enamel finish, mountable on any suitable wall surface — the manufacturer’s own instruction is to fasten securely to assure adequate load bearing, and we treat wall construction as a survey item on every project.

The same stack-and-hang bins that sit on shelving hang on the panels by their full-width rear hanger, so a room can be rearranged without rebuying bins. Published complete packages pair a panel with a bin set in one line item, with bins in seven colours and optional dividers, windows and label holders.

Where dust and washdown matter, the chrome wire louvered panels do the same job with an open wire face. The manufacturer publishes three sizes with direct mounting clips included, plus optional offset clips that stand the panel off the wall so the space behind it can be cleaned — worth specifying in any room your infection prevention team audits for cleanability. Mounting screws are not included, because they depend on the wall.

Rails, grids and pegboard systems

Bin rails and hang rails are the lighter-touch option: a single horizontal rail carries a row of hanging bins above a bench or along a corridor wall. The wire catalog publishes hang rails from 14 to 60 inches in chrome and stainless finishes, and bin rail holders that adjust on 1 inch increments, so a rail row can follow the work rather than the stud spacing.

Grid systems handle the odd-shaped items bins cannot. The current Grid-Store pages describe wall tracks and uprights carrying heavy gauge 1/4 inch rod wire grids in a white gloss finish, with hooks, a 16 inch hook tube carrying five hooks, a slanted display shelf, and 12 by 12 by 8 inch baskets — one published with a 4 inch front lip for easy reach-in. The manufacturer describes the system as storing items ranging from catheters to crutches, and as suited to the walls around and above sinks, prep stations and work tables.

Q-Peg wall systems are the pegboard, made serious: a heavy-duty washable board the manufacturer describes as three times the strength of a conventional pegboard, with repositionable hooks, spacer kits and hanging bin kits mounted by bin clips.

PARTITION wall units build a bin wall from uprights and tie-bars: a starter unit is published as two uprights and three tie-bars, and each add-on shares an upright with its neighbour, so long runs get cheaper per foot as they grow.

Wire mesh hanging bins extend the hanging-bin idea to washdown and high-visibility uses, and the manufacturer highlights their hang strength for heavier hanging loads such as IV fluid storage.

Wall mounted wire shelving

Where the wall needs real shelf capacity rather than bins, cantilever wire shelving mounts a standard wire shelf on wall brackets. The manufacturer’s current cantilever page publishes single-shelf wall mounts in 14, 18 and 24 inch depths with two arms and two mounting brackets per order, and the wire catalog adds direct wall mount shelf packages in five depths from 12 to 24 inches and lengths from 24 to 72 inches, in chrome and epoxy finishes.

For multiple shelves on one wall, the post wall mount version fixes vertical posts to the wall and hangs cantilever arms from them, adjustable on 1 inch increments — the published post wall mount bracket needs 2 inches of clearance. Complete packages with bin holders are published in 36, 48 and 60 inch widths, carrying nine to thirty bins per package depending on width.

A cantilever shelf above a counter keeps the counter clear; a column of them beside a door stores a closet’s worth of stock in the dead corner. For full-height storage runs, floor-standing healthcare shelving is still the cheaper way to buy capacity — walls win where floor is the scarce resource.

The clear tip-out families are the smallest wall storage we supply: housings that stack or wall mount, cups that tip open to 45 degrees and lift out for refilling, published dividers to split a cup, a locking rod for the wide housings, and a louvered panel bracket so a tip-out strip can join a panel system. In exam rooms they replace the drawer nobody can find anything in; in pharmacies and sterile processing they keep the smallest consumables countable.

Planning a wall storage elevation

Wall storage is planned as an elevation drawing, not a shopping list. The sequence that works:

  • Survey the wall — construction, stud or blocking positions, and anything inside the wall; every published system defers fastener choice to the wall itself
  • Reach zones before capacity — daily picks between shoulder and hip height; bulk and rarely-touched stock above and below
  • Clearances — door swings, monitor arms, rails and code-required clearances your team specifies; we design to the criteria you provide
  • One bin standard — the same bins as your shelving programme, so stock moves between shelf, rail and panel freely
  • Labels and colours drawn on the elevation — decided before install, not after
  • Leave growth room — an empty rail costs little; a wall with no room left costs a renovation

What can actually be stored on a wall system?
More than most people expect. Hanging bins carry small and medium packaged supplies; grid systems with hooks and baskets handle irregular items — the manufacturer’s own page describes storing items ranging from catheters to crutches; cantilever wire shelves carry anything a normal shelf carries, in published depths from 12 to 24 inches.
How much weight can wall mounted storage hold?
It depends on the system and, critically, on the wall. The manufacturer publishes bin load capacities from 15 to 80 pounds for hanging bins on panels and rails, and instructs that panels be fastened securely to assure adequate load bearing. We survey wall construction and anchoring as part of every wall storage project rather than quoting a blanket number.
Do wall systems work in rooms that get audited for cleanability?
The families built for that concern are the wire versions: chrome wire louvered panels that the manufacturer describes as resisting dust build-up, optional offset clips that stand the panel off the wall so the space behind can be cleaned, and open mesh bins on a 3/8 inch grid. Cleaning protocols themselves are your team’s call — we design to the criteria you provide.
Can we reuse the bins we already have on shelving?
Usually yes. Quantum’s stack-and-hang bins have a full-width rear hanger designed for louvered panels and rails, so bins bought for shelving hang on a wall system unchanged. That is the strongest reason to keep one bin standard across the facility.
What is the difference between a louvered panel and a grid?
A louvered panel carries hanging bins in dense rows — best for packaged consumables. A grid carries hooks, baskets and shelves on a 1/4 inch rod lattice — best for tubing, positioning aids, crutches and other items that do not fit a bin. Many walls use both, side by side.
Who installs it, and what do you need from us?
We coordinate delivery and installation nationwide. From you we need the wall construction (or permission to survey it), the room’s clearance requirements, and the item list. Fasteners are specified per wall because the manufacturer publishes the systems without them for exactly that reason.
Is wall storage cheaper than shelving?
Per cubic foot of storage, floor-standing shelving is cheaper. Wall systems win when the floor itself is the constraint — an exam room that keeps its cart out of the doorway, or a substerile room that stays walkable. We treat the two as one layout problem and quote them together.
