A sterile processing department is a one-way street with storage at every step. Soiled items come in at one end, trays and sets leave from the other, and the room only works if nothing travels backwards. Sterile processing department storage planning is therefore mostly about direction, separation and staging space — and only then about which shelving or rack goes where. The SPD workflow, stage by stage
Storage that ignores the direction of travel is the fastest way to make a processing room unworkable — no matter how good the shelving is.
1. Soiled receiving. Case carts and containers arrive from surgery and procedural areas. They need a defined parking footprint, not a corridor. This is where most departments are short of floor.
2. Decontamination. Wet work, washers and handling space. Storage here is for consumables, brushes, baskets and racks in the immediate reach of the sinks, in finishes chosen for a wet environment.
3. Prep and pack. Assembly benches with instruments, containers, filters, wrap, indicators and count sheets all within reach. Storage density at the bench is what sets assembly speed.
4. Sterilizers and cooling. Loading racks and loading carriages in, and a cooling area out that cannot be skipped or crowded — cooling space is the most frequently under-drawn part of the room.
5. Clean storage. Sets, trays and containers held until needed, in locations that are countable and reachable without stacking.
6. Case cart build and dispatch. Carts picked, staged and sent, with a footprint for loaded carts waiting to go.

Notice how many stages need floor that is not shelving: cart parking at both ends, cooling space, and staging in the middle. In tight departments those are exactly the areas that get sacrificed to fit one more storage run, and the room slows down.
The storage problems specific to sterile processing
Keeping the soiled and clean sides apart
The separation between the decontamination side and the clean side is your department’s rule, set with your infection prevention team and your reviewers. Our job is to make the storage layout support it rather than quietly undermine it: storage that belongs to one side is not reachable from the other, carts and baskets used on the soiled side have a home there so they are not carried across, and pass-through points are not blocked by a shelving run. We design to the separation criteria your team provides — we do not interpret standards or survey criteria, and we make no claim about what a product does to the contents inside it.
Bench-side reach at prep and pack
Assembly is a reach problem. Every item an assembler needs that is more than a step away costs seconds hundreds of times a day. The fixes are wall-mounted rails and bins above the bench, shallow divided trays instead of deep drawers, and a labelled location per consumable rather than a shared shelf. In practice, moving consumables from a store room onto the bench wall is the single highest-value change we make in most existing departments.
Cooling and staging space that was never drawn
Items leaving a sterilizer need to sit undisturbed on a defined footprint, and trays waiting for a cart need somewhere that is not the aisle. Both are floor, not shelving, and both get squeezed first. We draw them explicitly and label them on the layout so they survive the value-engineering conversation.

Case cart flow and parking
Case carts are large, they arrive in bursts, and they need three separate footprints: soiled inbound, empty or clean waiting to be built, and built carts waiting for dispatch. Departments that only drew one end up parking carts in the corridor. Cart counts, cart dimensions and the door-to-door route are inputs we ask for early because they change the layout more than the shelving choice does.
Sets, trays and containers that cannot be stacked
Clean storage has to hold rigid containers and wrapped sets in locations where they can be picked without moving anything else. That pushes towards one set per location, shelf pitch set from the tallest container you actually run, open wire or basket racks for visibility, and enough locations that stacking never becomes the workaround. Where a set is only used monthly, it still needs its own labelled home — otherwise it takes someone else’s.
Loaners, consignment and the trays you did not plan for
Loaner and consignment trays arrive unannounced, in unpredictable sizes, and often in quantity. A department with no designated loaner area absorbs them into clean storage, which then overflows. A defined, labelled receiving and holding area for loaners — even a small one — protects everything else in the room.
Getting the zones and the direction right
An SPD layout is really six footprints in a fixed order, and the storage follows from them:
- Soiled receiving — cart parking, sized from real cart counts
- Decontamination — wet-environment storage in reach of the sinks and washers
- Prep and pack — bench-side wall and under-bench storage, densely divided
- Sterilizer loading and cooling — loading carriages plus a protected cooling footprint
- Clean storage — one set per labelled location, pitch set by the tallest container
- Cart build and dispatch — a footprint for built carts waiting to leave
Where floor is short, the levers are the same as anywhere else — re-pitch and re-zone first, then walls and vertical space, then aisle removal with high-density carriages in the clean storage area (see high-density medical storage and hospital mobile shelving). Aisle removal suits clean storage far better than the decontamination side, where wet work and immediate reach dominate.

Finishes follow the environment, not the room name
Within one department you can easily have three environments: wet and wash-down at decontamination, normal dry storage at the benches, and clean storage that gets wiped down regularly. The families we supply are offered in wire, solid and stainless steel and in all-polymer construction, and the sensible pattern is to specify per zone rather than picking one finish for the whole room.
