Choosing hospital shelving comes down to four questions, and the material is the last of them. How is the shelf cleaned, how heavy is the load, how wet does the room get, and how small are the items? Answer those and the choice between wire, stainless steel and polymer shelving makes itself. This guide runs the comparison honestly, including where each material is the wrong answer. The four questions, in order

Work through these before you look at a single product page. Most rooms end up needing two materials, not one.

1How is it cleaned?Which agents, how often, and does the shelf get wiped, sprayed or removed and washed? Bring the answer from your own infection prevention team.
2What does it carry?Weight per shelf, and whether the load is evenly spread or concentrated in one place. Point loads matter more than totals.
3How wet is the room?Standing water, condensation, washdown, or dry. This is the question that most often rules a material out.
4How small are the items?Anything that can fall through a wire shelf needs a solid shelf, a mat, a liner or a bin.

Two practical notes before the comparison. First, shelf posts and shelves are usually specified separately, so a single run can mix solid and open shelves at different levels — you rarely have to pick one for a whole unit. Second, the manufacturer publishes load figures per shelf size and per unit, evenly distributed; a shelf loaded in one corner does not behave like the published figure, and we size for the real load pattern.

Then choose the shelf type, level by level

The material question is usually settled for the whole room; the shelf type changes level by level. This is where most of the usable capacity is won or lost.

A common and effective pattern in a supply room is solid or lined shelves at eye level for small, frequently picked items, open shelves above and below for cartons and packs, and a basket or bin level at the bottom for loose items that would otherwise sit on the floor. That mix costs nothing extra to plan and it removes most of the daily annoyances staff report.

Sizing a run: the numbers to take with you

  • Room width and length at floor level, and again at shelf height — skirting, pipework and radiators change the usable dimension.
  • Ceiling height and the height of anything below it: sprinkler heads, light fittings, ducts and door heads.
  • Deepest item you have to store. Shelf depth is set by that item, not by the room. A run that is deeper than the items wastes floor and buries stock at the back.
  • Aisle width your staff and equipment need, including any cart that has to be pushed down it.
  • Reach height policy your own safety lead sets — that determines how many usable levels a unit has, not the post height.
  • Load per level, from the heaviest realistic level rather than an average.

Shelf depth deserves a second mention because it is the most common sizing error we see. An 18-inch item on a 24-inch shelf leaves six inches of dead space on every level of every unit, and staff fill it with items they then cannot see. Match depth to the item and add the space to the aisle instead, where it does some good.

Stationary, mobile or wall-mounted?

Material and shelf type settled, the last structural question is what the shelving stands on.

Stationary runs are the default: cheapest to install, nothing to maintain, and every run needs its own aisle.

Mobile shelving puts runs on carriages so one aisle serves a whole bank. It recovers real floor area and adds cost, moving parts and a floor-flatness requirement.

Wall-mounted rails and cantilever arms free the floor completely, which matters most in small clean utility rooms and at workstations.

Healthcare shelving selection FAQ

Is wire or solid shelving better for a hospital supply room?
Mixed is usually better than either. Open wire shelves suit cartons and packs and let you see the level below; solid or lined shelves suit small items that would otherwise fall through or tip. Most rooms want both at different levels.
When should we choose stainless steel shelving?
When the room is wet or gets washed down, or when the shelf itself is cleaned often and aggressively with the agents your infection prevention team specifies. It is the heaviest option, so it is a poor choice for runs you expect to reconfigure. See stainless steel shelving.
What is the advantage of polymer shelving?
Weight and removability. Polymer shelves and mats lift out for washing away from the run and a full-size shelf is easy for one person to handle, so runs actually get adjusted instead of staying wrong. Check the published load for the shelf size you need. See polymer shelving.

How deep should hospital shelving be?
As deep as your deepest item and no deeper. Extra depth buries stock at the back and takes floor space that would be more useful in the aisle. Measure the item, not the room.
How much weight will a shelf hold?
The manufacturer publishes a load figure per shelf size and per unit, evenly distributed. We quote those published figures for the size you choose rather than generalising, and we size for concentrated loads differently from spread loads.
How many shelf levels should a run have?
That follows the reach height your own safety lead sets and the height of your tallest items, not the post height. Work down from the highest usable level rather than up from the floor.
Can we add bins to shelving we already have?

Should we go straight to mobile shelving?
