Stainless steel is one of the most durable laboratory casework materials out there. Add that to the fact that most stainless steel casework can be coated with an epoxy finish, it’s the perfect sterile surface for just about any lab. Stainless steel is difficult to dent, and even more difficult to break, which means that no matter your client’s application, stainless steel casework is going to hold up considerably longer than any other commonly used casework material on the market.
The in-stock casework program is ready when you are and is designed “For the ones who get it done”. We are the do the full design and laboratory furniture contracting for a seamless install.

New Micro-lab chemistry station installed – The Blood Connection implemented the Modular Millwork system for their new 20,000 square foot biologics facility in 2006 and remain at the forefront of their industry today. They are constantly updating technology and reconfiguring labs to improve throughput and maintain leadership in the immunohematology sciences to provide safe, transfusable human blood products to hospital clients across the southeastern United States. Whether introducing Leuco filtering technologies, advanced microlab chemistry, 100% Zika testing or any host of non-stop innovation, they simply reconfigure their Modular Millwork to enable progress. Most updates are accomplished overnight to minimize downtime in their 24/7 facility.
Choosing a Laboratory Desk: Seated, Standing, Adjustable or Mobile
Not every lab desk does the same job. Start with the height and base that fit the work done at the desk, then choose the work surface for whatever will be spilled, cleaned or heated on it. One room can mix seated write-up stations, instrument desks and mobile units.
Seated lab desk (typically 29–30")
For write-up, data entry, microscopy and instrument control. Knee space, an optional drawer pedestal and a monitor shelf or rail keep the work area clear.
Standing or instrument companion desk (about 36")
Sits beside instrument benches at bench height, so the PC, controller and keyboard line up with the equipment it runs.
Height-adjustable desk
Electric or crank legs move between sitting and standing for shared stations and ergonomics. See adjustable-height lab tables.
Mobile lab desk
Locking casters let the desk move for reconfiguration, deep cleaning or a new instrument. See mobile lab tables.
Lab Desk Work Surfaces Compared
The surface matters more than the frame for how long a lab desk lasts. Match it to the chemicals and cleaning routine in that room. Compare full specifications on our laboratory work surfaces page.
| Surface | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Laminate | Dry areas, computer and write-up desks | Lowest cost and many colors; not for chemicals, solvents or heat |
| Phenolic resin | General chemistry, teaching and clinical labs | Good chemical and moisture resistance; lighter than epoxy |
| Epoxy resin | Heavy chemical use and high heat | The most durable choice for harsh chemicals; heaviest surface |
| Stainless steel | Cleanroom, sterile, food and pharma work | Easy to disinfect; avoid prolonged contact with strong chlorides |
Lab Desk vs. Lab Bench vs. Workstation
A lab desk is built for seated computer, instrument-control and paperwork tasks, usually with knee space and a laminate or phenolic top. A lab bench is a run of chemical-resistant work surface, often with utilities and base cabinets, for wet or dry bench work. A workstation combines the two with shelving, work rails, power and storage around one task. If you need full benches and tables rather than desks, see our lab workstations and tables.
Lab Desk Add-Ons
Most lab desks are specified with a few accessories so the computer, supplies and cables stay off the work surface.
Monitor arm or rail
Lifts screens off the work surface and sets them at eye level for seated or standing use.
Keyboard tray and CPU holder
An articulating tray and under-desk CPU holder free the top for samples and paperwork.
Power and data
Outlets and data ports on the desk or in the utility chase keep cords off the surface.
Catalyst work rails and reagent shelf
Vertical organizers, bins and a shelf keep supplies within reach without crowding the desk.
Drawer pedestal
Fixed or mobile drawer units add secure storage under seated desks.
Task lighting
Articulated or under-shelf lights improve visibility for detailed work.

Laboratory Desk FAQs
What height should a lab desk be?
Seated lab desks are typically 29 to 30 inches to the work surface, which suits write-up, data entry and microscopy with a standard chair. Standing-height and instrument companion desks are usually about 36 inches so they line up with bench-height equipment. Height-adjustable desks cover both for shared stations. We confirm the right height against your seating and instruments during design.
Laminate or phenolic: which lab desk surface do I need?
Laminate works well for dry computer, office and write-up desks. Choose phenolic resin when the desk will see moisture, cleaning agents or occasional chemical contact, and epoxy resin or stainless steel for heavy chemical use, high heat or sterile work.
Can a modular lab desk be reconfigured later?
Yes. Modular lab desks are built on freestanding frames, so shelves, work rails, monitor mounts, drawers and casters can be added or moved as the work changes, often in a matter of hours rather than a renovation.
Does Labs USA design and install laboratory desks?
Yes. Labs USA offers free lab layout design, supplies the desks, benches and storage, and can manage delivery and installation. Send your room size and how each station will be used and we will lay out the desks for you.
