Lab casework coordination fails in the gaps between disciplines

A lab package touches more disciplines than almost anything else in a building. Casework needs the architect. Hoods need mechanical. Sinks, gas, vacuum and DI water need plumbing. Bench power and data need electrical. Everything needs the equipment schedule, and the equipment schedule always changes.

What goes wrong is rarely a bad product selection. It is a hood added at design development that the exhaust design never heard about, or a worksurface material chosen for appearance and specified against the wrong chemical exposure, or a bench run that no longer fits once real equipment dimensions arrive.

This tool puts the reference material for the systems you are specifying in one place, and — more usefully — tells you what is missing from it. Where we have no published section or Revit family for something you selected, it says so and gives you the direct route to get it.

Specifications for casework, worksurfaces and lab shelving come first — an existing published section is the fastest route to an edited one.

Revit and CAD content is included where we publish it. Manufacturer content changes often, so for anything going into a model we would rather send the current family directly than have you place a stale one.

Material and finish literature is what settles the chemical-resistance question properly, rather than by appearance. It is the single most common source of a late change on a lab package.

Design tools — bench, casework and room configurators — are included for the systems that have them, which is often more useful at schematic design than any document.

Phase-specific advice is included, and for labs it is nearly always the same: settle the hood count and type early, because the mechanical design and the critical path follow it.

What this tool does not do

This package collects published reference material. It is not a project specification and has not been coordinated with your drawings.

  • Manufacturer data changes — confirm current data sheets, finishes and standards references before issuing for bid.
  • Nothing here is an engineering, code, egress or accreditation review.
  • Fume hood quantity, type and placement must be confirmed with the mechanical engineer of record.
  • Product availability and lead times are not addressed by these resources.

Can you write our casework section?
Yes, free of charge, and we will review it against your drawings for conflicts with mechanical, plumbing and clear height.
Do you have Revit families?
For many systems. Because manufacturer content changes, ask through the tool and we will send the current family for exactly what you are specifying.
When should we involve you?
Design development, ideally. Hood count and worksurface material are the two decisions that cause the most expensive late changes, and both are cheap to settle early.
Does the package cover cleanrooms?
Yes, as its own project type, with the casework and worksurface systems that go with it.
What if a system I need is not listed?
The list only offers systems we have published resources for, so it is honest rather than complete. Ask for spec assistance and we will supply what exists for anything else.
