Biosafety Cabinets — HEPA-Filtered Biological Containment

Biosafety cabinets (BSCs) protect lab workers, the environment, and (for Class II and III) the work product from biological hazards. They use HEPA-filtered laminar airflow to create containment zones for work with infectious agents, cell cultures, and other biological materials.

Labs USA supplies Class I, Class II (Type A2 and B2), and Class III biosafety cabinets NSF/ANSI 49 listed from leading manufacturers. We coordinate placement, exhaust connections, and certification scheduling.

Biosafety Cabinet Classes

Class Personnel Protection Product Protection Environment BSL Level
Class I BSL-1, 2, 3
Class II Type A2 BSL-1, 2, 3
Class II Type B2 BSL-1, 2, 3
Class III BSL-4

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between a biosafety cabinet and a fume hood?

Biosafety cabinets use HEPA-filtered airflow to contain biological agents and protect the work product from contamination. Fume hoods exhaust chemical vapors but provide no product protection and use no HEPA filtration. Never use a fume hood for biological work or a BSC for chemical work (unless specifically rated for chemical use).

How often do biosafety cabinets need certification?

NSF/ANSI 49 recommends annual certification. Most institutions require certification annually and after any move, filter change, or repair. Certification includes airflow measurements, HEPA filter integrity testing, and containment verification.

What BSC class do I need?

Class II Type A2 is the most common choice — it protects personnel, product, and environment while recirculating most air through HEPA filters. Type B2 is required when using volatile chemicals or radionuclides inside the BSC (it exhausts 100% of air). Class III is for BSL-4 maximum containment.
