Hospital mobile shelving puts clinical stock on units that roll: shelving on casters that parks in a bank and rolls out to be picked, or shelving on a track that slides side to side so the room needs one aisle instead of four. It is the least disruptive way to get more out of a store room, because nothing is fixed to the building. Labs USA plans the layout, specifies the units, and coordinates delivery and installation. Where mobile shelving beats fixed shelving

Fixed shelving decides your layout once. Mobile shelving lets the room keep changing after the install.

Four situations come up again and again in hospitals, and mobile units answer all four:

The room is full. Parking units against each other and rolling out the one you need removes the standing aisles. That is the whole argument for high-density healthcare storage, and mobile units are the version of it that needs no floor work.

The room is temporary. Swing space during a build, a unit opening in stages, a department that will move. Casters go with you; track and fixed shelving do not.

Stock has to reach the point of use. A loaded unit rolled to the work area beats a person walking back to a store room. Where the item needs to travel with a clinician rather than sit in a room, the answer is usually a medical cart instead.

The floor has to be cleared. Rooms that get wet-mopped, or where the floor is inspected, are much easier to work in when the shelving rolls out of the way.

The trade is stability and capacity. A unit on casters moves under load, so it wants brakes, bumpers and even loading; a static unit does not. Where loads are very heavy or very deep, static racking is the better answer — see our hospital modular rack system page.

What a mobile unit is actually made of

A mobile wire unit is four posts, a set of shelves, four donut bumpers and four swivel casters, two of them braked. The manufacturer’s published mobile wire units use 5 in stem casters in polyurethane or thermoplastic resin, come in 18 in and 24 in depths and 36 to 60 in lengths, and stand around 80 in tall overall in five- and six-shelf builds. Garment versions add a hang bar rated by the manufacturer at up to 75 lb evenly distributed.

Shelves are the part you choose for the room: open wire for airflow and visibility, solid shelves or shelf plates where you do not want anything falling through, and polymer shelf plates where the unit lives somewhere humid. Finish follows the environment — the manufacturer rates chrome and galvanized for dry storage, and epoxy-coated, 304 stainless and all-polymer for wet, cooler and freezer areas.

Basket modules, colour coding and par levels

Flat shelves waste the back half of a deep unit, because nobody reaches past the front row. Pull-out baskets fix that: the basket comes out on glides and the whole depth is reachable without unstacking anything. The manufacturer’s published post basket units combine four or five baskets with wire and solid shelves on 74 in posts, in the same 18 and 24 in depths as the rest of the range, on braked casters.

The other half of the job is finding things. Three cheap habits do most of the work:

One item, one labelled location. A shared shelf becomes an unfindable shelf within a month. Label the location, not the box.

Colour by category, not by unit. Colour-coded baskets, bins and handle strips let someone find the right group of supplies from across the room before they read a single label. Bin colours are usually specified one colour per unit, so the colour scheme has to be decided before the order, not after.

Two locations per fast mover. Pick from the front location, restock from the back one, and the empty front location is the reorder signal. That is a par-level system with no software in it, and it is what most departments should do before they buy any.

If your materials management team runs barcode or RFID location labels, mobile units are compatible with that in the boring sense: the label goes on the location. We do not supply the tracking system, and we do not make claims about what it will do for your counts — we make sure every location on the unit can carry a label and be reached without moving something else first.

Configuration and specification guidance

2Choose depth honestly24 in holds more per square foot than 18 in, but only if the back is reachable. Deep plus flat shelves means baskets or bins.
3Check the door and the routeA unit that will not fit through the door, round the corner or into the lift is a delivery problem, not a design detail.
4Decide what moves and what staysMobile everything is rarely right. Fast movers static at the front, bulk and slow movers mobile behind.
5Match finish to the roomDry, humid, wet, cooler or freezer. Finish also sets the warranty terms, which we confirm on the quote.
6Specify brakes and bumpersBraked casters on any unit that gets loaded while standing still, and bumpers wherever a unit meets a painted wall or a door frame.

Loading a unit that moves

  • Heaviest items on the lowest shelves, always — a top-heavy unit on casters is the main safety issue with mobile storage
  • Load evenly across the shelf: published capacities are stated as evenly distributed maximums, not point loads
  • Brakes on before anyone loads or picks from a parked unit
  • Leave the top shelf reachable without a step, or accept that it will be used for storage nobody rotates
  • Keep the travel path clear of floor drains, thresholds and cable covers
  • Re-check bumpers and casters as part of routine maintenance, not after damage

Covers, enclosures and controlled stock

Two problems come up once a unit is rolling. Dust and handling on open wire, which a fitted cover answers, and items that need to be shut away, which needs a mesh-panelled or enclosed unit rather than open shelving. Where the requirement is genuinely locked storage rather than a closed door, look at medical storage cabinets instead.

We do not make claims about what a cover or an enclosure does to the contents inside it. What we can say is that it keeps dust off, keeps hands out, and makes the unit easier to move through a corridor without losing the top layer.

Should we use baskets or flat shelves?
Flat shelves for cartons and boxed stock; pull-out baskets wherever the unit is deep and picked by hand, because nobody reaches the back of a 24 in shelf. Most rooms end up with both in the same unit.
