The Hygieia aluminum rack system

Hygieia is the manufacturer’s current rack for areas with the strictest cleaning routines: the sterile core, the OR supply room and the clean side of sterile processing. Its defining design decision is a sealed structure. The manufacturer states there are no open holes in the frame profiles, so every surface is reachable with a cloth, and the whole system is powder-coated or anodized aluminum that it says will not rust and can be cleaned with a wide range of liquids.

The rest of the system is about keeping supplies findable. When a basket or shelf is pulled for washing, its label stays on the frame at the original position, so the basket goes back where it came from. Levels reconfigure without tools on standard rails or on heavyweight telescopic slides, which the manufacturer specifies for loads over 10 kg.

Hygieia carries the same ISO 6040 baskets and trays as Pegasus carts, so a tray filled here rides a Salus transport cart to an Ecoline drawer without repacking.

  • Sealed aluminum frame, no open holes, all surfaces accessible for cleaning (manufacturer statement)
  • Labels stay on the frame when baskets are removed, so supplies return to the same slot
  • Tool-free relocation of basket and shelf levels; telescopic slides for loads over 10 kg
  • U type and E type orientations; stationary or mobile; open-frame Hygieia carts for clean and contaminated handling
  • Rails: standard, telescopic, double-sided, fixed-angle and no-touch open-top
  • Integrated polymer shelves the manufacturer rates up to 220 lb (100 kg) per shelf

U type or E type: laying out the room

Row of Pegasus Hygieia E type aluminum racks with ISO baskets and open shelves
E type racks: shallower, wider, better visibility in a narrow aisle.

Every Pegasus rack comes in two orientations, and the choice is a room-planning decision rather than a product one. A U type is deeper and puts more storage on a given wall. An E type is shallower and wider, so the product is more visible and the rack works in a narrow corridor.

The manufacturer’s own reference layout for a sterile processing store puts U type racks on casters along the long walls, in groups of three so they can be rolled out for floor cleaning, and E type racks back to back down the center with a usable aisle for a cart on each side. The published Hygieia footprints are about 200 cm (79″) tall, 49 cm (19.5″) deep for the E type and 63.7 cm (25″) deep for the U type.

If you would rather see this on your own floor plan, our Healthcare Storage Room Designer lays out racks to your room dimensions, and the sterile storage planning guide explains the clearances.

Hygieia polymer shelves

Alongside baskets and trays, Hygieia takes integrated heavy-duty polymer shelves. The manufacturer publishes three sizes to match the rack widths, each supported by an anodized aluminum lateral support set sold as three rails per box:

Shelf Item number Published size Lateral support
UU HYG-SHELF-UU 60 x 83 cm (23.6 x 32.7″) HYG-LSU-UU
UUU HYG-SHELF-UUU 60 x 128 cm (23.6 x 50.4″) HYG-LSU-UUU
EE HYG-SHELF-EE 37.5 x 123 cm (14.8 x 48.5″) HYG-LSU-EE

The manufacturer rates the shelves at up to 220 lb (100 kg) each, states a temperature range of -22°F to +194°F (-30°C to +90°C), and offers both a standard shelf and a version it describes as antimicrobial. We repeat those as manufacturer statements. For a general comparison of polymer, wire and stainless shelving in clinical rooms, see Polymer Medical Shelving.

Rails, baskets, trays and dividers

The rack is a frame; what makes it work is the rail and module system. Pegasus publishes five rail types for Hygieia: standard rails, telescopic rails, double-sided rails, fixed angled rails and no-touch open-top rails. Onto those go stainless wire baskets in 10 and 20 cm heights, polymer trays with lids, and dividers.

Salus CSSD modular shelving

Salus CSSD is the sterile-processing shelving in the Salus family: a sealed 20-micron anodized aluminum structure the manufacturer describes as having no open holes and no paint to fail, designed for ISO 60-40 stainless shelves and standard containers on telescopic or fixed guides. Published features include shelf heights adjustable every 120 mm, a load capacity of 1,000 kg per unit, a temperature range of -20°C to +80°C, flat packaging, and assembly without special tools.

Like Hygieia it comes in U and E types and uses a labelling system where the label stays on the frame when a shelf or container is pulled. The manufacturer pairs it with its no-touch handling method for central sterilization departments. The mobile Salus CSSD units that move containers between SPD and the OR are covered on our Pegasus transport carts page.

Top Salus and Max Salus, the general-purpose aluminum shelving in stationary I-, L- and U-shaped runs or on casters, are quoted the same way; tell us the room and we will propose the run.

CSPS: container and sterile pack storage system

CSPS is the stainless answer for rigid containers and heavy packs. Instead of polymer shelves or wire baskets, each level is a stainless steel bed with raised side and back walls, mounted on retractable slides the manufacturer rates at 110 percent extension, so the whole container comes clear of the frame and cannot slip off while the bed is moved. Shelf spacing is reconfigured by the end user without tools.

The manufacturer gives a load capacity of 37 kg (88 lb) per bed and notes the beds will not rust and are scratch resistant, and that they will not shed particles the way plastic or powder-coated shelves can. It also points out room for your own IT, such as bar-code readers, on the frame. We repeat these as manufacturer statements.

CSPS is a good fit where the sterile core stores mostly rigid containers, or where infection prevention has asked for stainless contact surfaces. For the stainless shelving alternatives we supply from other manufacturers, see Stainless Steel Hospital Shelving.

Medical supply cabinets and nurse servers

Supply cabinet with fully retracting baskets on telescopic slides.

The cabinetry line takes the same baskets and puts them behind doors. Pegasus builds supply cabinets around pull-and-tilt baskets on telescopic slides: the manufacturer states upper baskets tilt to 116 degrees when opened for a clear line of sight, that no gaps are needed between baskets because each one fully retracts, and that this yields 33 to 50 percent more storage per square meter than flat shelving. Slides are rated for loads up to 40 kg.

Published construction: a fully glued carcass of 19 mm dense chipboard with ABS interior side panels, a 10 cm laminated plywood plinth with leveling feet, anodized aluminum door hinges, a polymer dust and noise seal, and doors in tambour, solid (HPL/Formica finish) or glass at a published height of 210 cm. Basket handles take interchangeable color strips for color coding.

Nurse servers are the pass-through version: a cabinet built into the wall between the corridor and the patient room, restocked from the corridor and used from the room, with the manufacturer’s pass-through tilt-down basket system and optional locking pass-through medication or sharps drawers. Pegasus supports these with CAD blocks, Revit files and 3D room drawings for the design team; we coordinate that with you and your architect.

Need a priced rack today? The Pegasus E/U rack line

Hygieia is the current sealed-frame generation and is quoted individually. Pegasus’s established E/U rack line uses the same U and E orientations, the same ISO 6040 baskets and trays, rails, covers and dividers, and every part of it is priced from the Pegasus price list. You can configure a multi-bay run, add rails and baskets, and order it now in our Rack & Basket Storage Designer.

We suggest the priced rack line when the room is a supply room, cath lab or ward store and budget timing matters; Hygieia, Salus CSSD or CSPS when the room is a sterile core or SPD and the sealed frame or stainless beds are specifically wanted.

Pegasus Hygieia, Salus CSSD, CSPS and cabinetry FAQ

What is the difference between Hygieia and the Pegasus E/U rack line?
Both use U and E orientations and the same ISO 6040 baskets, trays and rails. Hygieia is the current sealed-frame aluminum generation, quoted individually. The E/U rack line is priced from the Pegasus price list and can be configured and ordered now in our designer.
Why are Hygieia, Salus CSSD, CSPS and cabinetry not priced online?
They are configured to the room, the current model list is confirmed with the manufacturer on each request, and cabinetry is built to order in several door and finish options. We quote them in writing rather than publish a price that may not match what ships.
U type or E type?
U type is deeper and stores more per wall; E type is shallower and wider, with better visibility, and suits narrow aisles. Most rooms use both: U along the walls, E back to back in the middle.
How much do the shelves and beds hold?
Manufacturer ratings: Hygieia polymer shelves up to 220 lb (100 kg) each; CSPS stainless beds 37 kg (88 lb) each; Salus CSSD 1,000 kg per unit; cabinet basket slides up to 40 kg. Telescopic slides are specified for loads over 10 kg on Hygieia. These are the manufacturer’s figures, restated on your quote.
Are the racks mobile?
Hygieia and Salus are offered stationary or on casters; the manufacturer’s reference layout rolls wall racks out in groups of three for floor cleaning. Cabinetry is built in.
Can we buy just baskets and trays for racks we already own?
Yes. Stainless wire baskets, polymer trays, lids and dividers in ISO 6040 format are priced and can be ordered in our ISO 6040 reorder tool.
Does Pegasus provide Revit or CAD files for the cabinets?
The manufacturer states it supports design teams with AutoCAD blocks, Revit files and 3D room drawings. We coordinate those requests with you and your architect as part of the quote.
Do you install?
We coordinate delivery and can arrange assembly of racks and installation of cabinetry with your contractor. Tell us on the request.
