Stainless steel hospital shelving is what you specify when the room fights back: wash-down cleaning, standing water, humidity, or a corrosive environment that eats plated finishes. The manufacturer publishes it as 304 stainless with an electropolish finish, and describes that finish as the highest industry standard in the prevention of corrosion. What the manufacturer publishes
Stainless is a corrosion decision, and the published wording is precise about that and nothing else.
The stainless family is published as 304 stainless steel with an electropolish finish, which the manufacturer describes as the highest industry standard in the prevention of corrosion and highly effective for corrosive and high-humidity environments. It also publishes a lifetime limited warranty for that finish against rust and corrosion — worth reading on the quote, because warranty terms differ by finish across the range.
Stainless starter units are published as heavy-duty units with a load capacity of up to 800 pounds, supplied with four posts and four shelves, configurable with add-on kits into long end-to-end runs or an L shape, and convertible with optional mobile kits. Shelves are all-welded with extra wire trussing; the units assemble without tools using split conical sleeve adaptors and include adjustable foot levelers. The 24 by 48 by 63 inch kit we loaded is published at 800 pounds per shelf.
Solid shelving is a separate published family: 18 gauge shelves in 304 stainless (galvanized is the lower-cost alternative, published as double hemmed 18 gauge), with a marine edge perimeter that helps retain a spill. Solid shelf units consist of four shelves and four posts, can be mobilised with the WR-00H mobile kit, and the manufacturer notes that units with an add-on kit cannot be made mobile.

Wire, solid or a mix
Most stainless rooms end up mixed, and the split is easy to reason about.
- Wire shelves — air moves, nothing pools, and you can see what is on the shelf above. The default for most of a run.
- Solid shelves — the answer where small items would fall through, where a leak must not reach the shelf below, or where a shelf doubles as a working surface. The marine edge is the point.
- Stainless shelf tops — an 18 gauge 304 stainless top converts an existing wire shelf into a flat wipe-down surface without replacing the unit.
- Bottom shelf solid — a common compromise: solid at the bottom to catch what falls, wire above.
One planning point that costs money when missed: mobile kits and leveling legs are mutually exclusive, and units built with an add-on kit cannot be made mobile. Decide mobility before the order, not after the room changes. If mobility is the goal for the whole run, mobile shelving on tracks is usually a better answer than casters on every unit.

Where stainless earns its cost
- Wash-down and decontamination rooms — standing water and constant wiping: the case where the published corrosion positioning matters most and the extra cost is easiest to justify.
- Wet floors and platform storage — low wire platform racks keep stock off a floor that gets washed, so the bottom of the run is not the first thing to corrode.
- Accessory-heavy runs — hooks, rails and ledges mount to the same posts, so a stainless run adapts without changing the frame.
- Cooler-adjacent and humid stores — where humidity rather than direct wetting is the issue, the epoxy finishes are the manufacturer’s stated lower-cost alternative.
Where stainless is not the answer: a dry supply room. Chrome does that job for less, and the money is better spent on more linear feet of shelving or a high-density conversion. If corrosion is the entire problem, polymer shelving is worth pricing alongside stainless — it removes metal from the equation completely.
Specifying a stainless run
- Say how the room is cleaned — hose-down, wipe-down or dry. That single answer decides the finish more than anything else.
- Match fixings to the shelving; stainless shelving on plated accessories corrodes at the accessory first.
- Choose depth by the deepest item, and keep the bottom shelf high enough that the floor can be cleaned under it.
- Decide mobile or fixed before ordering, because of the leveling leg and add-on kit restrictions.
- Plan the wet end of the room first — the run nearest the sink or washer sets the finish for the sightline.
- Ask for warranty terms in writing per finish, on the quote.
