A catheter storage cabinet has one job that generic storage does not: keep long, pre-packed items separated, visible and retrievable without disturbing the ones next to them. In practice that means one of two layouts — hanging on hooks, or laid flat in colour-coded bins — and the choice depends on how your team picks. Hanging storage: hook carts and hook rails

Hanging keeps a pre-packed catheter straight and lets one item be taken without touching its neighbours.

The manufacturer’s catheter hold and store design is a modular chrome cart built for separation and access. The current product page we loaded publishes a 24 by 48 inch cart, 69 inches high on 63-inch posts, with 32 catheter hooks; the current wire literature describes the same family with 36 or 42 catheter hooks, and positions it for central supply and operating room supply areas. Hooks are also sold separately in packs of six, in chrome, so a run can be extended or a hook count changed later.

Because it is modular, the same frame accepts the shelving accessories used elsewhere in the programme: label holders at the front, ledges, and shelves below the hook bank for boxed stock. That matters more than it sounds — a hook cart that also carries the boxes for the same procedure means one trip instead of two.

Binned storage: colour-coded and countable

The bin approach replaces the hanging concept with colour-coded plastic bins on a modular wire frame. The manufacturer’s stated reasoning is quicker identification and lower unit cost, and the published cart carries 80 bins on a 24 by 48 inch frame with an 800 pound load capacity. Bins are described as moulded from high density polypropylene and listed in blue, green, ivory, red, yellow and black, with clear also listed on the category page.

Bins win when picking is by size or French gauge and the packs are short enough to lie flat: a bin per size, a colour per family, and a par count that can be done by looking rather than counting. Hooks win when the packs are long, when they must not be bent, or when a coiled pack in a bin would get buried under the ones above it.

Plenty of departments run both on one frame — hooks at the top for the long items, bins below for sizes — which is the main reason we specify the modular version rather than a fixed cabinet. Bins and dividers from the wider medical bins and containers range fit the same shelves.

  • Locked steel cabinets — where the stock has to be behind a door: all-welded 14 gauge cabinets with a 3-point locking handle and two keys, shipped assembled, interior configured per project.

What we will not do is imply that any enclosure protects sterility or packaging integrity. Enclosures control access and dust exposure; judgements about package integrity, expiry and handling belong to your clinical and supply chain teams, and we design to the criteria they give us.

Configuring it for the way your team picks

  • Sort by how people ask for it — if the request is a size, organise by size; if it is a procedure, organise by procedure and accept some duplication.
  • Fix the pitch by the longest pack, not the average, or the top hook row becomes unusable.
  • One colour per family, written down once and reused when stock changes, so a misplaced item is visible from the doorway.
  • Count positions, then add a row — new product lines arrive between projects and a full cart gets overflow stacked on top of it.
  • Decide mobile or fixed early, because caster choice, handle position and door clearances all follow from it.
  • Put the par level on the label, not in a binder.
