What the manufacturer publishes

Every figure below is the manufacturer’s published specification for the Millenia system, and every capacity is a maximum evenly distributed load.

Materials. The beams are described as pultruded with glass fibers in a thermoset resin composite. Side connectors, the adjustable foot, the shelf conus, the connector and the bumper are reinforced nylon. Shelf plates and post caps are polypropylene. The manufacturer marks the system as patent pending.

Sizes. Depths are published at 18, 21 and 24 inches; lengths at 24, 30, 36, 42, 48, 54, 60 and 72 inches; heights at 14, 26, 38, 50, 62, 74, 86 and 96 inches. Posts are listed individually from QPP14 to QPP98, so a run can be built to a ceiling height rather than to a kit.

Capacity. 1,000 pounds per shelf and 2,000 pounds per unit, maximum, evenly distributed. The manufacturer recommends an extra reinforcement dunnage stand for units with 54-inch and longer shelves, and notes on the current product page that dunnage supports add stability and increase weight capacity to the bottom shelves only.

Behaviour. Shelves adjust on one-inch increments with no tools. Units can be stationary or mobile, and add-on units extend a run side to side or into an L or U shape. Shelf plates are available vented or solid. The current product page publishes a lifetime warranty against rust and corrosion.

Vented or solid plates

Vented plates are the default for most clinical runs. Air moves through them, nothing pools on the surface, and stock on the shelf below stays visible. They are also lighter to lift out for cleaning.

Solid plates earn their place where small items would fall through an open grid, where a spill must not reach the shelf below, or where the top shelf is used as a working surface. Most rooms we specify use vented plates throughout with solid plates in one or two positions.

The feature that changes housekeeping is that plates lift out individually. A single dirty or damaged plate is removed, cleaned or replaced, and put back — without dismantling the run or emptying the shelf above it. That is the practical difference from a welded metal shelf, and it is usually what wins the argument in a wash-down room.

  • Vented plates — an open grid surface for airflow and visibility; the default across most of a run and lighter to handle.
  • Plates that lift out — individual plates release from the beam so one shelf can be cleaned or swapped without touching the rest of the unit.
  • Stationary or mobile — the manufacturer publishes mobile capability for the system, so a unit can be specified on casters with brakes from the start.
  • Side guards and accessories — guard rails keep stock captive on a shelf; label holders fit the shelf front so a location survives a restock.

Where polymer beats metal, and where it does not

  • Wet, humid and wash-down rooms — the case polymer is built for. No plated steel in the load path and a published lifetime warranty against rust and corrosion.
  • Rooms where shelves get cleaned often — individual plates come out, get cleaned and go back, so the cleaning task does not depend on emptying a run.
  • Cooler-adjacent stores — the manufacturer positions the system for wet, humid or dry environments alike.
  • Heavy point loads and very long spans — read the published capacities carefully: 1,000 lb per shelf and 2,000 lb per unit are maximum evenly distributed figures, and the manufacturer recommends a dunnage stand on 54-inch and longer shelves.
  • Dry supply rooms on a budget — chrome wire is cheaper and is the manufacturer’s stated finish for dry storage.
  • Where a stainless surface is specified — polymer is not a substitute for a written stainless requirement.

The honest comparison is against stainless steel shelving rather than against chrome wire: both polymer and stainless are corrosion answers, at different prices, with different handling and different surfaces. We quote both when a room is wet so the decision is made on numbers rather than habit.

Specifying a polymer run

Six things we need, and the reason for each:

  • Room dimensions with door positions — post heights are published in eight steps, so a run can be built to the ceiling instead of stopping short
  • What is stored and how heavy it is — to check the published per-shelf and per-unit figures against real loads
  • Shelf lengths — 54 inches and above triggers the manufacturer’s dunnage stand recommendation
  • Vented or solid, position by position — cheaper to decide now than to add plates later
  • Stationary or mobile, and whether the run has to move for cleaning
  • Whether the run extends — add-on units go side to side or turn an L or U shape
