What the manufacturer publishes

Numbers first, because sizing a run badly is the expensive mistake, not choosing the wrong finish.

Quantum publishes wire shelves as all-welded, with support trusses underneath for strength, and rates them at 600 to 800 pounds per shelf depending on the width. Their solid shelves are listed as 18 gauge, available in 304 stainless steel and galvanized finishes. Posts are published as 16 gauge carbon steel with location grooves on one-inch increments and numbers printed between the grooves so a crew can set four posts to the same height without measuring. Leveling legs are included with the posts, and the manufacturer notes they cannot be used together with stem casters — that is a decision to make before the order, not after.

Shelf widths (the depth against the wall) are published from 12 to 36 inches and lengths from 24 to 72 inches, which the manufacturer describes as 50 shelf size configurations. Units assemble without tools using split conical sleeve adaptors, and the starter kits are listed with adjustable foot levelers and optional mobile kits.

How to read that table. These are the manufacturer’s published figures for those specific models, loaded from their current product pages, and every capacity is an evenly distributed load. They are not a rating for a whole range, and they are not a substitute for a project-specific review. We confirm the model, the shelf count and the capacity you actually need on the quote.

Finishes, and where each one belongs

Finish is the decision people rush and then regret. The manufacturer’s own descriptions are the safest guide:

  • Chrome — a plating process that deposits hard chrome over a nickel surface. The manufacturer positions it for dry storage environments, and it is the standard finish for most supply rooms.
  • 304 stainless steel with an electropolish finish — described by the manufacturer as the highest industry standard in the prevention of corrosion and effective for corrosive or high-humidity environments. This is the finish for wet rooms and wash areas.
  • Green, gray and black epoxy over carbon steel — the carbon steel is treated with an iron phosphate base and the epoxy is electrostatically applied. The manufacturer positions the epoxy finishes for high-humidity, wet and cooler applications.

Two practical notes from projects. First, mixed finishes in one room look like a mistake even when they are correct, so if part of a room is wet, decide whether to finish the whole room the same way. Second, ask about warranty terms per finish on the quote rather than assuming they match — the manufacturer publishes different terms for different finishes, and they are worth reading before you choose.

Unit types we specify most

  • Starter and add-on runs — a starter unit gets four posts; add-on units share a post pair, so a long wall costs less per foot than the same capacity in separate units. Straight-line, right-angle and back-to-back alignments are published.
  • Corner units — corner shelves close the dead 90-degree gap where two runs meet: published at 700 lb per shelf, adjustable on 1 in centres, compatible with 18 and 24 in deep add-on units.
  • Solid-shelf and mat conversions — solid shelves, inlay mats or a PETG cover published at 1.5 mm thick where small items fall through wire or a spill would reach the shelf below.
  • Divided and ledged shelves — dividers keep like items together; 4 in ledges act as a perimeter so stock cannot be pushed off the back or side.
  • Mobile conversions — optional mobile kits turn a stationary unit into a cart. Mind the leveling-leg and stem-caster restriction and check door widths before choosing caster size.
  • Enclosed runs — modular enclosure panels published as 6 gauge wire on 3 in x 3 in squares close a unit in on four shelf depths (14, 18, 21 and 24 in) and three heights (63, 74 and 86 in).

Sizing a run that still works in three years

  • Measure the wall, then subtract — door swings, light switches, thermostats, fire equipment and the pull-out depth of anything opposite. What is left is your shelving length.
  • Choose depth by the deepest item, not the average — a 24 inch shelf holding 12 inch boxes wastes half its footprint and hides stock at the back; two 18 inch runs usually beat one 24 inch run.
  • Set the bottom shelf high enough to clean under and the top shelf low enough to reach without a step, then fill the middle.
  • Leave one shelf of spare capacity per unit — every room we revisit has absorbed a new product line since it was built.
  • Decide mobile or stationary before ordering posts, because leveling legs and stem casters are mutually exclusive.
  • Label at the shelf, not on the box — label holders clip to the shelf front so the location survives a restock.

Capacity arithmetic is worth doing on paper before anyone quotes hardware. Length divided by the width of a typical case gives positions per shelf; positions multiplied by usable shelves gives positions per unit. How much weight does a wire shelf hold?
The manufacturer publishes 600 to 800 pounds per shelf depending on the shelf width, evenly distributed, and lists 800 pounds per shelf on the 24 by 48 inch starter kit we checked. Corner shelves are published at 700 pounds per shelf. Those are the manufacturer’s figures for specific models; we confirm the rating for the model on your quote.
What are the shelves and posts made of?
Wire shelves are published as all-welded with support trusses; solid shelves as 18 gauge in 304 stainless or galvanized finishes; posts as 16 gauge carbon steel with grooves on one-inch increments. Finish options are chrome, 304 stainless with an electropolish finish, and green, gray or black epoxy over iron-phosphate-treated carbon steel.
Which finish should we choose?
Follow the environment. The manufacturer positions chrome for dry storage, 304 stainless with electropolish for corrosive and high-humidity conditions, and the epoxy finishes for wet, humid and cooler applications. We do not make cleaning, disinfection or infection prevention claims about any finish.
Can shelving be made mobile later?
Usually yes, using the optional mobile kits, but the manufacturer notes that the leveling legs supplied with the posts cannot be used together with stem casters. If mobility is even a possibility, tell us before the order so the posts and caster type are right the first time.
How close together can shelves be set?
Posts are published with location grooves on one-inch increments and numbers printed between the grooves, so shelves adjust in one-inch steps and four posts can be set to the same height quickly.
Can a run be closed in so stock is not visible or reachable?
Yes. Modular enclosure panels are published as 6 gauge wire on 3 by 3 inch squares, working with four shelf depths (14, 18, 21 and 24 inches) and three heights (63, 74 and 86 inches), with a clip hardware package to stop rattling in transit.
