Hospital bulk storage racks hold the things nobody wants in a clean utility room: cases of filters, boxes of lamps, spare pumps, seasonal equipment and the pallet of something that arrived early. Steel shelving is the right product for that job because the shelf is a solid panel – small parts and loose hardware do not fall through it, and it takes a knock from a cart without deforming. Steel or wire, open or closed

Two decisions decide most of the specification, and both are about what is going on the shelf.

Steel or wire. The manufacturer describes these steel shelving systems as designed for storage of small parts and equipment that might otherwise fall through standard wire shelves, with a dual layer construction and a double hemmed perimeter, and publishes a 400 pound load capacity per shelf with a smooth powder coat finish. Wire, covered on the healthcare shelving page, is the better answer where air movement and visibility matter more than a solid surface.

Open or closed. Open units are cheaper, lighter and reachable from every side. Closed units add a back panel and two side panels; the manufacturer states that closed shelving provides extra protection from dirt and dust, creates separation between areas and prevents product from falling off the sides or back of the unit. In a store room that shares a wall with a corridor, that last point is usually what decides it.

Published heights are 39 and 75 inches. The 39 inch unit is a bench-height run you can see across; the 75 inch unit is the workhorse for bulk.

The IRONMAN clip shelving family is published in 18 and 20 gauge, four heights and fifteen shelf sizes. An open starter kit is published as four offset posts punched on 1 inch centres, one pair of back sway braces, two pairs of side sway braces and the selected number of shelves with hardware; the closed starter unit swaps the braces for one back panel and two side panels. Add-on kits share posts with the unit beside them, so a run costs less per linear foot than a row of separate units.

Reading the model numbers. The first number is the post height (39 or 75 inches), the middle four digits are the shelf size (1836 = 18 by 36 inches) and the last digit is the shelf count. A CL prefix marks the closed version, and an 18G or 20G prefix marks the steel gauge.

Sizing a bulk store

1Measure the biggest cartonShelf depth and shelf pitch are set by the largest thing that has to sit on the shelf, not by an average.
2Weigh a full shelfCompare it with the published 400 pound per shelf figure and leave a margin. Cases of liquid are heavier than people expect.
3Set the shelf pitchPosts are punched on 1 inch centres in the clip family, so pitch is a decision rather than a constraint – do not leave 6 inches of air above every carton.
4Pick open or closedClosed where dust, separation from an adjacent area or things falling off the back matter; open everywhere else.
5Use add-on unitsSharing posts down a run reduces cost and gives a flush face along the wall.
6Leave the aisle your carts needThen check whether high-density would let you reclaim it – a bulk store is the best candidate in the building.

Where bulk shelving earns its place

The usual homes are the central stores and receiving dock, the plant operations parts room, filter and lamp stores, the linen room, groundskeeping and transport stores, and the disaster or surge stock that has to be somewhere. Where the same room also holds consumables for clinical areas, keep those on their own labelled run and give it an owner – shared bulk storage without an owner is how a store room stops working.

The manufacturer publishes 400 pounds per shelf for these steel shelving units, for an evenly distributed load. We compare that with a weighed full shelf and leave headroom rather than designing to the published figure.
What heights and sizes are published?
Units are published at 39 and 75 inches high in three shelf sizes, with four to eight shelves depending on the model, in 18 and 20 gauge steel, open or closed. The IRONMAN clip family is published in four heights and fifteen shelf sizes.
Why steel instead of wire here?
Because of what is on the shelf. The manufacturer describes this steel shelving as designed for small parts and equipment that might otherwise fall through standard wire shelves, with dual layer construction and a double hemmed perimeter. Wire is still the better answer in clinical rooms where visibility and air movement matter.
Can we get bins on the shelving?
Yes – shelf bin units and euro drawer bin units are published as complete combinations. The manufacturer publishes 36 inch wide units at 39 or 75 inches high with a 400 pound per shelf capacity, bins in six colours and drawers in four.
Can a run be extended later?
Yes. Add-on kits share posts with the neighbouring unit, so a run can be extended without buying a whole new unit, as long as the height and gauge match. Keep a note of what was installed – matching a run three years later is much easier with the model numbers.
Is this industrial shelving?
The construction is the same as any heavy-duty steel shelving, and there is no reason it should not be. What we do differently on this page is size and specify it for hospital stores and plant operations, in buildings where the store shares corridors and lifts with clinical areas.
