The Situation
A hospital emergency department laboratory is a different animal from a research lab. The work is STAT: chemistry panels, blood counts, blood gases, and rapid infectious disease testing, run one sample at a time, on a clock that is measured against a patient in a bay down the hall. Turnaround time is the product. Everything about the room either supports that or gets in the way.
That drives an unusual set of furniture requirements. Bench layout has to keep specimen receiving, processing, analysis, and disposal in a sequence a technologist can walk without backtracking. Every surface has to tolerate blood, urine, controls, reagents, and the disinfectants used between samples, repeatedly, for decades. Storage has to be immediately visible, because in a STAT lab nobody has time to open six doors looking for a reagent kit. And the room has to be cleanable to a clinical standard, not a light-duty office standard.
This project was a buildout of the emergency department laboratory at Queen’s Medical Center in Wahiawa, on Oahu, for the diagnostic laboratory service that operates it. Working from drawings, the package had to be specified as a complete room rather than a list of parts: casework, work surfaces, sinks, fittings, and safety provisions all coordinated to one layout.
Then there is Hawaii. Every component ships across an ocean. Anything missing, mismeasured, or damaged is not a next day replacement; it is a delay measured in weeks on a project where the department is waiting to open the room. That reality changes how a package should be specified: fewer assumptions, verified dimensions, and materials that arrive intact and stay intact in a marine climate.
The Solution
Labs USA specified and supplied the complete furnishings package from the project drawings. The casework is a powder coated inset steel cabinetry system with painted steel drawer bodies, one hundred pound full extension drawer glides, and brushed stainless steel wire pulls, independently tested to meet or exceed SEFA 8, the Scientific Equipment and Furniture Association standard for laboratory grade casework.

Three deliberate choices in this casework matter more in a STAT lab than they would anywhere else. Wall cabinets are thirteen inches deep and thirty inches tall with glass panel swinging doors, so reagent kits and supplies are identified from across the room instead of hunted for. Mobile cabinets ride on locking swivel casters with three quarter inch black phenolic resin tops, interlocking drawer glides, and counterweights, so a cabinet can be repositioned as workflow changes but will not tip when a loaded drawer is pulled out. And every painted surface is one specified colour throughout, so replacements and additions years from now still match.
Work surfaces are one inch thick black phenolic resin with a four inch tall splash where the drawings called for it. Phenolic resin is the workhorse surface for clinical laboratories: it takes disinfectants, blood, and reagents without staining or swelling, it is monolithic rather than layered so a scratch does not open a path into a substrate, and it is lighter than epoxy resin, which matters on freight to the islands. A separate heavy duty two inch square tubular steel table assembly with a one inch phenolic top, rear stretcher, side leg rails, and nylon leveling glides provides a freestanding instrument station in the room.
Four black epoxy resin drop-in sinks, eighteen by fifteen inches and eleven inches deep, were supplied with tail pieces. Epoxy resin is specified for sinks specifically because that is where the chemistry ends up concentrated. Fittings are hot and cold mixing faucets with vacuum breakers, serrated hose ends, and blade handles in a polished chrome finish, plus a laboratory style deck mounted emergency eyewash with a drench hose and backflow preventer. Blade handles are operable with a wrist or forearm when hands are gloved and contaminated, and vacuum breakers keep laboratory water out of the building’s potable supply.
