An oxygen cylinder cart in a hospital is a transport problem with an unusual constraint: the load is heavy, upright, and must not move relative to the cart. The same is true of most hospital transport work – the cart is sized to the route and the load restraint, not to the maximum it could carry. Cylinder carriers: what actually matters

Three things: the cylinder sits upright and separated, the cart cannot tip on the route, and one person can move it without a struggle.

Upright and separated. Cylinder carriers use a divided frame so each cylinder stands in its own position and cannot knock against the next one. Coated dividers protect the cylinder surface. Position count and cylinder size are the two things to confirm before anything else, because a carrier sized for one cylinder type will not hold another.

Stability. A tall, heavy, top-loaded cart behaves differently from a shelf cart. Wheelbase, caster size and where the load sits vertically all matter, and thresholds and ramps on the route are where problems show up. The published wire cart platform ships with four swivel casters, two braked, and four donut bumpers; larger casters roll over thresholds better.

One-person operation. If a loaded cart needs two people, it will be moved by one anyway. Check the pushing force on the real route, including the worst slope, before committing to a size.

Cylinder carriers, covered carts and basket transport carts are configured on published wire platforms in chrome, stainless steel or epoxy, with two u-handles or a single push handle. There is no current published model under a cylinder cart name, so this page carries no cylinder cart model numbers or capacities: we confirm the frame, the position count and the published dimensions on the quote.

Specifying to the route

  • Walk the route. Narrowest doorway, tightest turn, lift depth, thresholds, ramps and the surface change at the loading dock. The tightest point sets the cart size.
  • Count what moves per trip rather than per day. Two trips with a cart that fits beats one trip with a cart that does not.
  • Confirm the cylinder type and size before specifying positions – a carrier built for one size will not take another.
  • Decide the parking position at both ends of the route, out of the corridor clear width, and mark it. Transport carts with no home end up in doorways.
  • Pick the handle style for the route: a single push handle for long corridor runs and heavy loads, two u-handles for tight rooms where you push from either end.
  • Specify bumpers and casters as consumables. On a cart that runs a route every day, these wear first and are far cheaper to replace than the cart.

How many cylinders should a cart hold?
Fewer than you think. Size the cart to the trip, the route and the pushing force rather than to the day’s total, and confirm the cylinder type first because a carrier built for one size will not take another. Two manageable trips beat one cart that cannot turn the corner.
Do you advise on how cylinders should be secured or handled?
No. Gas handling, cylinder securing and the rules that apply in your building are decided by your safety and clinical engineering teams. We supply the cart, we tell you the manufacturer’s published specifications, and we configure to the criteria you provide.
Is there a published model number for a cylinder cart?
Not in the manufacturer’s current literature. The family appears only in an older master catalog, so we do not publish a model number, dimension or capacity for it. We configure a current published cart platform and the quote names the exact frame and its published dimensions.
What finish should a transport cart be?
Chrome for general indoor use, epoxy where a coated surface or colour coding is wanted, stainless steel where wash-down and durability matter. All three are published for the wire cart platform.
Should transport carts be covered?
If the load crosses public corridors, yes – covers and enclosure panels are published cart options and they solve the problem an open cart creates in a public space. Open carts are faster to load, so many facilities run both.
Do you help with the route and parking?
