ESD Lab Tables for Utah Semiconductor and Microelectronics Labs

Failure analysis, test, metrology and packaging labs need tables that control static, hold instruments steady and stay clean. Labs USA plans ESD lab tables station by station for Utah electronics labs.

Utah Chip Makers Need Support Labs Too

Utah is now home to high-volume chip making. Texas Instruments started production at LFAB, its 300-millimeter wafer fab in Lehi, in 2022 and calls it the only 300-mm fab in the state (TI). A second Lehi fab, LFAB2, broke ground in 2023 with about 800 new jobs planned (TI news release), part of an $11 billion investment the Governor’s office called the largest in Utah history (Office of the Governor).

Research sits beside it. The University of Utah Nanofab runs an 18,000-square-foot facility with ISO class cleanrooms plus packaging and test areas (Utah Nanofab), and BYU operates the Integrated Microfabrication Lab, a class 10 cleanroom (BYU Cleanroom).

The fab floor gets the headlines, but much of the daily work happens next door: failure analysis, electrical test, metrology, packaging, incoming inspection and teaching labs. Those rooms need lab tables built for static control, steady instruments and clean handling. For furniture inside ISO 3 to ISO 5 fab space, see our semiconductor cleanroom furniture page. This page covers the support labs around it.

Match the Lab Table to the Job

Start with the task at each station, then pick the table. A single lab often needs three or four table types.

🔬

Failure Analysis

Inspection, probing and rework on sensitive parts. Needs an ESD work surface, grounding and fume capture for soldering.

📏

Metrology

Microscopes, microbalances and optical gauges. Needs a heavy, isolated table that keeps floor vibration out.

⚡

Electrical Test

Oscilloscopes, power supplies and fixtures. Needs instrument shelves, power strips and the right work height.

📦

Packaging and Kitting

Die, boards and trays moving between steps. Needs clean benches, ESD carts and closed storage.

Chemical prep areas are different again. Wet work usually calls for a chemical resistant top such as epoxy or phenolic resin, and many ESD laminates are not made for acids or solvents. Keep wet and ESD stations separate and check the top maker’s chemical data before you mix them.

ESD Work Surfaces and Grounding

An ESD table is only as good as its path to ground. The ESD Association’s S20.20 standard sets the work surface limit at less than 1.0 x 109 ohms, and companies may set a tighter range inside that limit (ESDA S20.20 revision notes). In practice that means a static dissipative top, a metal frame bonded to it, and a common point ground wired to your facility ground.

Each operator station also needs a wrist strap point on the table, plus ESD safe chairs and grounded flooring where your program calls for them. For rework and soldering, pair the bench with an ESD safe fume extraction arm so the capture hood does not add a charge risk.

  • Static dissipative laminate, ESD phenolic or grounded stainless tops, chosen per station
  • Frame, shelves and drawers bonded to the same ground point as the top
  • Wrist strap snaps within easy reach of every seated or standing position
  • Test the whole system after install and on a schedule, not only when parts fail
  • Label ESD stations so non-ESD tables are not used for sensitive parts by mistake

Tables for Vibration-Sensitive Metrology

Floor vibration from foot traffic, carts, pumps and air handlers blurs images and upsets fine weighing. Microscopy Today summarizes the vibration criteria (VC) curves used for sensitive labs: VC-A is adequate in most cases for optical microscopes to 400x and microbalances, while many electron microscopes need VC-D (Microscopy Today, 2024).

A heavy balance table with a stone top and its own frame, not tied to the next bench, is the usual answer for optical stations. Electron microscopes and e-beam tools usually need a site survey and the maker’s isolation system, so ask for their pre-installation guide first. Our anti-vibration table guide explains the options.

Clean Benches and Particle Control

Support labs are rarely full cleanrooms, but die, wafers and bare boards still need clean handling. A benchtop laminar flow workstation gives an ISO 5 zone right on the table, so parts can be opened and inspected without building a new room. Stainless steel or smooth laminate tops with sealed edges make daily wipe downs easy.

When a space does need to be classified, see cleanrooms in Utah and our stainless steel cleanroom furniture. Moving parts between rooms on ESD safe carts keeps the static control chain intact from dock to bench.

Planning ESD Lab Tables in Utah

Bring these details to your first conversation and the quote will come together much faster:

  • The stations you need and what happens at each one
  • Your ESD control program limits, if you already have one
  • Instruments per station, with weights and any vibration specs from the maker
  • Sitting or standing work, and whether heights must change between users (see our lab table height guide)
  • Which areas are wet, clean or general lab space

Related products, not the ESD tables shown on this page. The ESD snorkel and laminar flow workstation sit on or over your lab tables; the Lyon workbench kit is not ESD rated and suits general prep or kitting areas. ESD lab tables are quoted per station. Call (801) 855-8560.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a lab table ESD safe?

A static dissipative work surface, a frame bonded to it and a reliable path to facility ground. ANSI/ESD S20.20 sets the work surface limit at less than 1.0 x 10^9 ohms. Wrist strap points, ESD chairs and flooring complete the station.

Can I add ESD protection to an existing lab table?

Often yes, with a dissipative mat, a ground cord and a wrist strap point. For stations that handle sensitive parts every day, a table built with an ESD top and bonded frame is easier to keep in spec.

Are ESD tops chemical resistant?

Many are not designed for strong acids or solvents. Use chemical resistant tops such as epoxy or phenolic resin in wet areas and keep ESD stations separate, unless the maker’s data shows the top can handle your chemicals.

Do I need an anti-vibration table for my microscope?

Optical microscopes at high magnification and microbalances usually benefit from an isolated balance table. Electron microscopes often need a site survey and the maker’s isolation system, so check its pre-installation guide.

Is this the same as semiconductor cleanroom furniture?

No. In-fab ISO 3 to ISO 5 furniture has stricter particle and outgassing rules. This page covers support labs such as failure analysis, test, metrology and packaging. Our semiconductor cleanroom furniture page covers the fab.

Do you install lab tables outside Salt Lake City?

Yes. Labs USA plans, delivers and installs lab tables throughout Utah, including Lehi, Provo, Ogden, Logan and St. George.
