Nelson Laboratories needed another fixed work position for its Salt Lake City testing facility, built to bench height and finished in a surface that stands up to laboratory chemicals and daily cleaning. Labs USA supplied a welded steel table assembly with a one piece phenolic resin top and protective leg boots, working with our partner Fenco Solutions.
The Situation
Nelson Laboratories runs testing and sterility assurance work from its Salt Lake City, Utah facility. Laboratories like this add and move equipment constantly as test methods and client volumes change, and every instrument eventually needs somewhere solid to live. A rolling cart will hold something for a week, not a heavy instrument at a fixed working height in a room that gets wiped down with disinfectants.
This was a repeat order. Labs USA had already built this customer a custom welded equipment table to raise autoclaves off the floor, so the starting point was a specification the laboratory already trusted. Two constraints shaped it. The first was height: a table that is off from the bench beside it creates a step in the work surface, so the finished height had to be confirmed against the room before fabrication. The second was timing, because the laboratory asked to be told when the table was ready so delivery could be scheduled around lab operations.
The Solution
Labs USA supplied a welded steel laboratory table assembly with a one inch thick phenolic resin countertop in black and black polyethylene boots on the legs, quoted and built to a confirmed working height that matched the existing benches in the room. The lead time quoted was approximately eight weeks from release, and delivery timing was coordinated with the laboratory before the table shipped.
A welded table assembly arrives as one rigid piece. There are no bolted joints to work loose, which is what eventually makes a knock down frame rock under an instrument. The polyethylene leg boots keep the steel out of standing liquid when the floor is mopped and stop the leg from scarring a sealed or resin floor if the table is repositioned.
The work surface is phenolic resin, one inch thick, supplied in black. Phenolic resin is solid material all the way through rather than a decorative layer over a substrate, so moisture, common laboratory reagents and repeated disinfection do not swell or lift an edge. In a laboratory that cleans surfaces between procedures, that property decides whether the table still looks serviceable in year eight.
Because the welded assembly and the top were quoted together as one laboratory table specification, the finished height, the top overhang and the surface all came from the same drawing. The required height was carried explicitly on the order, so the fabricator built to the room rather than to a standard leg length, the same approach used when a table has to align with existing laboratory casework.
