Why Utah Assay Labs Need Heavy-Duty Tables

NIOSH studies of mine assay labs found workers could be exposed to lead, crystalline silica, respirable dust, mercury and arsenic (NIOSH). Most assay labs move each sample through the same stations. Each station puts a different load on the table under it.
Choosing Tables for Prep, Weighing and Wet Chemistry
Welded frames for crushers and heavy trays. A fully welded steel table does not rack or loosen under vibration the way a bolted frame can. Heavy square tube legs, leveling feet and a thick top keep a benchtop crusher or a full tray of samples steady. Weighing needs its own table. Fire assay results come down to a very small bead weighed on a very sensitive balance. Vibration from crushers down the hall or foot traffic can make the reading drift. An anti-vibration balance table with a heavy isolated top keeps the balance steady. Put the weighing room as far from the prep area as your floor plan allows.
Mobile tables for flexible stations. Some labs add mobile lab tables for sample staging or batch sorting, so the space can change as the sample load changes.
The wet lab side. After prep, many samples go to acid digestion and instrument analysis. That area looks more like a standard chemistry lab, with fume hoods, chemical resistant tables and laboratory casework for reagents and glassware. Store acids and flammables in proper safety cabinets, not under a prep table.
Designing Tables Around Dust and Silica Control
In an assay lab, tables have to work with the dust control plan, not against it. OSHA’s general industry silica standard limits respirable crystalline silica to 50 micrograms per cubic meter as an 8-hour average. It also bars dry sweeping and compressed-air cleaning of surfaces where that could raise exposure, unless the dust is captured or no other method is feasible (29 CFR 1910.1053). In 2024, MSHA lowered the silica limit for miners to the same 50 microgram level (MSHA). Your safety team decides which rule applies to your lab.

- Choose smooth, sealed tops that can be wet-wiped or HEPA-vacuumed instead of blown off
- Keep the weighing room and wet chemistry area separate from dusty prep work
- Use a fume hood for acid digestion, and a powder weighing hood where fine powders are handled
- Plan table height and reach so technicians are not leaning over running equipment
