A suture cart is an inventory-visibility problem in cart form. The boxes are small and nearly identical, you carry dozens of variants, and the whole point of the cart is that a person can find one variant fast and see when it is running out. Sloped shelves, dividers and labelled positions do that; a flat shelf full of stacked boxes does not. Labs USA is a supplier and project partner, not the manufacturer. Sloped shelves and why they work

Tilt the shelf towards the user and three things happen at once: the labels face the person, stock feeds forward, and an empty position is obvious from a distance.

The manufacturer publishes sloped shelf and bin accessories on the wire shelving platform, in chrome, stainless steel and epoxy finishes, with wire, solid and mixed shelf combinations. A suture build is that platform plus dividers and labelled positions – one position per variant, sized to the box rather than to the shelf.

Dividers matter as much as the slope. Without them, boxes migrate sideways and two variants merge into one position within a week, which is how the wrong box gets picked. With them, each position holds a countable quantity and a gap is a signal. The published bin and divider range gives you sizes to match the boxes you actually carry – see medical bins and containers.

Where a cart carries a very wide variant range, a double-sided build gives you roughly twice the positions in the same floor footprint, loaded from both sides. It needs clear space on both sides, which is a layout decision rather than a product one.

Open builds are faster to pick from; enclosed builds with covers or doors suit corridors and shared spaces. There is no current published model called a suture cart, so we configure a published platform and the quote names the exact frame, shelves, bins and accessories with the manufacturer’s published dimensions.

Working out the position count

  • List the variants you stock, not the total boxes. The variant count is the position count, and it is usually smaller than people fear and larger than the cart they were about to buy.
  • Measure the box – the largest and the smallest. Position width comes from the box, not from dividing the shelf into equal parts.
  • Set a par level per position and mark it inside the bin, so low stock is visible without counting.
  • Group by how they are chosen, in the order clinicians think about them, then keep that grouping identical on every cart in the department.
  • Print the labels. Label holders at the position, printed, replaced when the position changes. Handwriting and tape are what make a good build decay.
  • Leave 15 to 20 percent spare positions for the variants that get added after go-live. A cart with no spare positions gets a cardboard box next to it.

How many positions does a suture cart need?
One per variant you stock, plus 15 to 20 percent spare for variants added later. Count variants rather than boxes: the variant count sets the number of positions and the box size sets how wide each position has to be.
Why sloped shelves rather than flat ones?
A sloped shelf faces the labels towards the user, feeds stock forward as items are taken, and makes an empty position visible from a distance. Flat shelves hide the back of the row, which is where old stock accumulates.
Open or enclosed?
Open builds are faster to pick from and easier to audit. Enclosed builds with covers or doors suit corridors and shared spaces where the contents should not be exposed or removed casually. Both are configurable on the published platforms.
Is a double-sided cart worth it?
If you carry a wide variant range and have clear access on both sides, yes – it roughly doubles the positions in the same floor footprint. If the cart lives against a wall, it is wasted, so check the parking position first.
Can we match an existing cart on another unit?
Usually. Send a photo, including the label if there is one, and we will identify the platform and match the shelf, bin and divider layout so both carts are picked the same way.
