Adding Shelving to Existing Lab Benches

You do not need new benches to get bench shelving. Bench-mounted uprights and phenolic shelves can be added to most existing lab benches, including center islands where the shelves need to be reached from both sides. The fit depends on the bench top material and on what is mounted on or under the bench.

What to plan for

  • Bench-mounted uprights or reagent poles: Painted steel poles bolt through the work surface. Set down the centerline of an island bench, they carry tiered shelves that can be reached from both sides.
  • Several sections instead of one long unit: Shorter runs are easier to fit around sinks, service fixtures and equipment, and they let you set different shelf heights along the bench.
  • Shelf material, depth and rear lips: 1-inch chemical-resistant phenolic resin shelves are the usual choice. Rear retaining lips keep items from being pushed off the back of island or peninsula shelving.
  • Know your bench top: Epoxy resin, phenolic resin, steel and wood tops are fastened differently. If you are not sure what yours is, a photo of the edge and the underside lets us confirm the mounting method before quoting.

What to send for a quote

Bench length, top material (or a photo), whether the shelves must be reachable from one side or both, the shelf depth and number of tiers you want, what will be stored on them, and anything on the bench the shelving has to clear, such as sinks or gas and power fixtures. Send it through our contact form or call (801) 855-8560.

Common Questions

Can shelving be added to an existing lab bench top?

Usually, yes. Bench-mounted uprights bolt through the work surface, so we confirm the top material, its thickness and what sits underneath (cabinets, drawers or service lines) before quoting. Tell us the bench length and whether the shelves need to be reachable from both sides.

How high can you store items on center island bench shelves?

Keep stored items at least 18 inches below sprinkler heads. In rooms without sprinklers, fire codes commonly require storage to stay at least 24 inches below the ceiling. Keep heavy items and chemical containers on the lower shelves, at or below eye level.
