Why Seismic Restraint Matters for Utah Labs
Most Utah labs sit along the Wasatch Front, one of the most active earthquake zones in the Intermountain West. The Utah Geological Survey puts the 50-year odds of one or more magnitude 6.75 or larger earthquakes in the Wasatch Front region at 43 percent, and the odds of a magnitude 6.0 or larger at 57 percent (Utah Geological Survey). The 2020 magnitude 5.7 Magna earthquake was the strongest in Utah since 1992 (University of Utah).
In a lab, the building is only part of the risk. Tall shelving can tip, bottles can slide off open shelves and cabinets can walk away from the wall. What Utah Code Requires for Lab Shelving
Utah’s building code sends seismic design for nonstructural items to ASCE 7. The state Division of Facilities Construction and Management (DFCM) summarizes it plainly: under IBC Section 1613.1, seismic restraint of nonstructural components must meet ASCE 7 (DFCM seismic restraint guidelines). FEMA’s nonstructural guide notes that ASCE 7 Chapter 13 applies to permanent floor-supported shelving over 6 feet tall in Seismic Design Categories C through F, and that the weight of the contents must be included (FEMA E-74, Section 6.5.2.2).
Your engineer and building official set the Seismic Design Category and the final anchorage for your building. The DFCM rules above apply to state projects; many Utah owners and designers use them as a baseline.
Bracing and Anchoring Lab Shelving
Brace in both directions. FEMA documents shelving rows that were tied across the aisle but not along their length, and collapsed lengthwise like dominoes. Back and side sway braces, or solid backs and sides, keep each unit square.
Anchor the base and the top. Posts should bolt to the floor with base plates, and tall units need ties to structure overhead or to a wall that can take the load. FEMA shows bracing that failed because it was screwed into gypsum board instead of studs.
Choose the shelving type with this in mind. Heavy-duty steel shelving with cross bracing, welded frames or engineered wire shelving with seismic posts and brace kits will take anchors and ties far better than light-duty units. Our guide to laboratory shelving types compares the main options.
Keeping Chemicals and Glassware on the Shelf
Keep bottles on the shelf. The National Academies’ lab safety guide recommends storing chemicals in a closable cabinet or on a shelf with a lip that keeps containers from sliding off in an earthquake (Prudent Practices in the Laboratory). One university lab design guide calls for lips 1.5 inches high on shelves that hold chemicals or breakable containers (UW lab safety design guide).
Contain what does fall. Secondary containment trays catch leaks, keep incompatible chemicals apart and give bottles a second wall. Store heavy and liquid items on low shelves.
Tall Cabinets, Safety Cabinets and Casework
Tall storage and safety cabinets are top-heavy, especially when full. Fasten tall storage cabinets to the wall or floor, and make sure wall cabinets are hung on framing or blocking rated for the load. - Use lips, rails or doors on shelves that hold chemicals or glass
