The Situation

Photographic film processing is one of the last routine wet chemistry workflows outside a formal laboratory. Developer, stop bath, and fixer are mixed and used in open trays and tanks, at room temperature, by hand. The chemistry is not exotic, but it is not harmless either: acetic acid from stop bath, sulfur dioxide from fixer, and the amine and hydroquinone components of developers all give off vapor that is unpleasant in a small room and irritating over a long session.

A recirculating filter unit is only as good as the filter media behind it, which is why the particle and gas combination matters here. The particle stage catches aerosol and dust, including the fine mist thrown by pouring and agitation. The gas stage is activated carbon media that adsorbs the organic vapor and acid odor that a particle filter passes straight through. Source capture beats room ventilation on physics, not on preference.
