A general contractor building out a laboratory in south Florida needed source capture at two bench positions with no wall available to mount to. The Situation

East Coast Construction Group is a general contractor, and on this project it was building out laboratory space rather than operating it. That changes the nature of the purchase. A contractor is responsible for equipment that has to be installed correctly, coordinated with mechanical and ceiling trades, and accepted by the owner, usually while the room is still an active construction site.

The requirement was source capture at two bench positions. Two things made wall mounted extraction arms the wrong answer. The bench positions were not against a usable wall, and the room had a suspended ceiling with structure well above it, so the only solid mounting available was overhead.

Overhead mounting introduces a dimension problem that decides whether the installation works at all. The bracket has to reach from real structure, in this case hard deck or channel framing at about one hundred forty four inches above finished floor, down through a false ceiling at about one hundred eight inches, and still leave the arm at a working height over the bench. Get that drop length wrong and the hood either sits too high to capture anything or hangs low enough to be in the way.

The contractor also had a coordination problem that is specific to false ceilings. A bracket passing through a ceiling tile leaves a rough opening. Left as is, it is an unfinished penetration that the owner will reject and that undermines the ceiling plane, so the trim detail had to be part of the equipment order rather than something field fabricated later.

The Solution

Labs USA specified a matched ceiling mounted package for both positions: a three inch diameter standard fume extractor arm sixty inches long, a sixty inch vertical ceiling bracket with a four inch side exhaust outlet, a fourteen inch clear dome capture hood with a hood stub, and an escutcheon trim plate to finish the ceiling penetration. The bracket length was set from the actual dimensions rather than assumed: mount to structure at about one hundred forty four inches above finished floor, pass through a false ceiling at about one hundred eight inches, and place the arm connection at a height where a sixty inch arm reaches the whole bench without being pushed to the end of its travel. The equipment supplier confirmed the height before release so the bracket would not need resizing on site.

The side exhaust outlet on the bracket is a detail worth naming. A top exhaust connection is normal on a wall bracket, but on a ceiling drop it forces ductwork to turn immediately above the bracket, in the tightest part of the space, right where ceiling grid and other trades are already competing. A four inch side outlet lets the duct leave horizontally in the ceiling cavity, which is where it wants to run.

The clear dome hood was chosen for the same practical reason. A dome pulls from a wide area above the work rather than a narrow face, which suits bench operations where the operator cannot predict exactly where fume will rise. Because it is transparent, it does not shadow the work or block sight lines, and operators are far more willing to position a hood they can see through.

Escutcheon plates finished each ceiling penetration in a manufactured trim ring rather than a field cut patch. It is a small part with a large effect on how a completed room looks at handover, and it gives the ceiling contractor a clean detail to work to. Advantage

General contractors get equipment wrong on laboratory projects for a predictable reason: the package is bought as a line item, the mounting dimensions are not verified, and the mismatch shows up on site when the ceiling is already closed. Return on Investment

On a contractor project the return is measured in avoided rework and in schedule protection, not in energy savings. A drop bracket that turns out to be the wrong length after the ceiling is closed is one of the more expensive small mistakes available on a laboratory fit out, because it touches ceiling, mechanical and equipment trades at once.

Source capture also reduces what the building has to do.
