USP 797 and 800 Compounding Room Layout: Furniture Requirements for Hospital Pharmacies - USP 797 800 compounding room fur...

USP <797> (sterile compounding) and USP <800> (hazardous drug handling) set strict requirements for pharmacy compounding spaces — and the furniture inside them. From cleanroom-grade casework in the buffer room to negative-pressure containment in HD areas, the right furniture is essential for compliance. Here’s what hospital pharmacy directors and facility planners need to know.

USP <797> Room Layout

USP <797> defines three areas for sterile compounding:

Area Purpose Furniture Requirements
Ante-Room Gowning, handwashing, staging Garbing bench/hooks, hands-free sink, supply pass-through, gowning mirror
Buffer Room Sterile compounding under PEC Cleanroom-grade casework, PEC (laminar flow or BSC), stainless steel shelving
SCA (Segregated Compounding Area) Low-risk compounding only ISO 5 PEC with surrounding ISO 7 environment, basic casework

Buffer Room Furniture

  • Cleanroom casework: Stainless steel or powder-coated steel with smooth, sealed surfaces. No particle-shedding materials (no wood, no unsealed MDF).
  • Minimal furniture footprint: Less furniture = fewer surfaces to shed particles. Only what’s essential should be inside the buffer room.
  • Stainless steel shelving: Wire or solid shelving for IV bags, syringes, and supplies — must be cleanable and non-particle-generating.
  • No sinks in the buffer room — water creates contamination risk. Sinks belong in the ante-room.
  • Task chairs: Cleanroom-rated, non-fabric, non-particle-shedding chairs only.

USP <800> Hazardous Drug Requirements

USP <800> adds requirements for handling hazardous drugs (chemotherapy, certain hormones, antineoplastics):

Negative-Pressure Room

  • HD compounding must occur in a negative-pressure room relative to surrounding areas
  • Minimum 12 air changes per hour (ACPH), externally exhausted
  • Room must have a line of demarcation at the entrance
  • Class II Type B2 biosafety cabinet (100% exhaust) or CACI (containment ventilated enclosure)

HD Storage Furniture

  • Hazardous drugs stored separately from non-hazardous drugs
  • HD storage area should be negative-pressure or externally ventilated
  • Closed-system containers and spill kits at every HD storage and handling location
  • Dedicated refrigerator for HD drugs (not shared with non-HD)

Furniture Material Selection

Material Buffer Room Ante-Room HD Room
Stainless Steel 304/316 ✅ Best choice ✅ Excellent ✅ Best choice
Powder-Coated Steel ✅ Acceptable ✅ Excellent ✅ Acceptable
Epoxy Resin (countertops) ✅ Good ✅ Good ✅ Good
Laminate/Wood ❌ Not allowed ⚠️ Limited use only ❌ Not allowed

Common Compliance Gaps

  1. Sink in the buffer room — move it to the ante-room
  2. Fabric chairs inside compounding area — replace with cleanroom-rated models
  3. Unsealed casework seams — caulk all joints and penetrations
  4. HD drugs stored with non-HD — add dedicated HD shelving or cabinet
  5. No spill kit at HD handling areas — mount kits on the casework within arm’s reach
