BSL-2 Lab Design Checklist for Hospital Microbiology

Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) is the standard containment level for hospital clinical microbiology labs, where technologists handle blood cultures, respiratory specimens, wound cultures, and other potentially infectious materials daily. Designing a BSL-2 lab correctly from the start prevents costly retrofits and inspection findings.

This checklist covers the CDC/NIH Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL) requirements as they apply to hospital lab furniture and facility design.

BSL-2 Facility Requirements Checklist

Access & Separation

• ☐ Lab is separated from unrestricted areas (not open to public corridors)
• ☐ Self-closing, lockable doors
• ☐ Biohazard signage at all entry points with agent information and emergency contacts
• ☐ Lab access limited to trained personnel only

Surfaces & Casework

• ☐ Bench tops are impervious to water and resistant to chemicals, heat, and disinfectants
• ☐ Recommended materials: epoxy resin or stainless steel (not laminate)
• ☐ Spaces between benches, cabinets, and equipment are accessible for cleaning
• ☐ Chairs and stools are covered with non-fabric, non-porous material
• ☐ Floors are slip-resistant, seamless or coved at walls (no carpet)
• ☐ Walls are smooth, easy to clean, and painted with washable paint

Biosafety Cabinets

• ☐ Class II biosafety cabinets available for all procedures that may create aerosols
• ☐ BSCs positioned away from doors, high-traffic areas, and supply air diffusers
• ☐ Minimum 12 inches of clearance from walls and other equipment on sides
• ☐ BSCs certified annually per NSF/ANSI 49
• ☐ BSC exhaust properly connected (Type B2 hard-ducted; Type A2 canopy or thimble connected)

Handwashing & Decontamination

• ☐ Sink available in the laboratory for handwashing
• ☐ Hands-free operation (foot pedal, sensor, or wrist blade) recommended
• ☐ Eyewash station accessible within 10 seconds of travel
• ☐ Emergency shower accessible (not required inside BSL-2 but must be nearby)
• ☐ Autoclave available in the building (in the lab or nearby)

Ventilation

• ☐ Ventilation provides inward airflow without recirculation to other areas
• ☐ Recommended: 6-12 air changes per hour (ACH)
• ☐ Lab is under negative pressure relative to corridors
• ☐ Exhaust air is not recirculated (or is HEPA-filtered before recirculation)
• ☐ Windows (if present) are sealed or fitted with screens

Waste Management

• ☐ Biohazard waste containers at each workstation
• ☐ Sharps containers mounted within arm’s reach of every needle-use area
• ☐ Biohazard bag holders integrated into casework or mounted on walls
• ☐ Clear separation between regular waste and biohazard waste

Furniture-Specific BSL-2 Tips

Casework Configuration

Hospital microbiology casework should be wall-mounted or have legs/toe kicks that allow floor cleaning underneath. Avoid base cabinets that sit flat on the floor — they trap contamination at the seam.

Bench Height

Most microbiology work is seated (reading plates, microscopy, computer entry). Standard bench height of 30 inches works for seated tasks. BSC work is standing — 36-inch counter height or adjustable-height BSC stands accommodate both postures.

Storage

Chemical storage in BSL-2 labs requires:

• Flammable storage cabinet for alcohol-based reagents and stains
• Acid/corrosive cabinet for disinfectants in concentrate
• Lockable cabinets for controlled substances (if applicable)
• Segregation of incompatible chemicals

CAP & CLIA Inspection Items Related to Furniture

CAP and CLIA inspectors evaluate facility conditions during accreditation surveys. Common furniture-related findings:

• Bench surfaces damaged or non-impervious — cracked epoxy, delaminated surfaces, or porous materials
• Inadequate space between equipment — can’t clean behind or between instruments
• BSC certification overdue — check certification stickers
• No eyewash or emergency shower accessible
• Biohazard signage missing or incomplete
