Perchloric Acid Fume Hoods — Wash-Down Systems for Safe Digestion
Perchloric acid creates explosive perchlorates when vapors contact organic materials or accumulate in ductwork. Perchloric acid fume hoods prevent this through stainless steel construction (no organic materials), integral wash-down systems that rinse the interior and ductwork after each use, and dedicated exhaust systems with stainless steel ductwork.

Acid and Corrosive Fume Hoods: What Changes
Perchloric acid work has its own requirements, covered above. Most acid enquiries are not perchloric: they are hydrochloric, nitric, sulphuric or hydrofluoric acid work in a general chemistry, environmental or metals laboratory, and the question is what to change on an otherwise standard hood.

Hydrofluoric acid
HF deserves an explicit mention because it attacks glass and requires specific material choices and emergency provision. If HF is in use, say so at the enquiry stage rather than listing it among other acids: it changes the liner, the sash glazing and the recommended safety equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is an acid hood, and is it different from a standard fume hood?
An acid hood is a fume hood built so that the liner, the fasteners, the plumbing and the exhaust path all tolerate acid vapour. A standard painted or epoxy lined hood handles incidental acid use; sustained work with hydrochloric, nitric, sulphuric or hydrofluoric acid attacks the liner, the sash hardware and the duct over time. Perchloric acid is a separate category again, because it forms explosive perchlorates and requires a stainless wash-down hood with dedicated exhaust.
What liner should I specify for acid work?
Polypropylene or PVC liners for general acid and corrosive service, stainless steel (316 for chlorides) for perchloric wash-down hoods, and epoxy resin or polypropylene work surfaces to match. Tell us which acids and at what concentration and duty, and the liner follows from that rather than from a catalogue default.
Do I need acid storage under the hood?
If acids are used at the hood, they should be stored in a lined acid storage cabinet, and the neatest arrangement is directly beneath it. Acid and flammable storage are different cabinets with different linings and should not be combined.
Can carbon filtration handle acids in a ductless hood?
Acid specific filter media exists and is used for light, well defined acid work. It has real limits: loading rate, breakthrough monitoring and a named owner for filter changes. For sustained acid work, or any perchloric or hydrofluoric work, ducted is the correct answer.
Why can’t I use a regular fume hood for perchloric acid?
Perchloric acid vapors react with organic materials (epoxy coatings, PVC ductwork, lubricants) to form explosive perchlorates that accumulate in ductwork joints and fans. Regular hoods use organic materials and share ductwork — creating explosion and fire hazards. Perchloric hoods eliminate these risks through all-stainless construction and wash-down systems.
How often should perchloric acid hoods be washed down?
After every use of perchloric acid — even small quantities. The wash-down cycle takes 5–15 minutes and rinses all interior surfaces and ductwork. Many facilities also perform monthly wash-downs regardless of use as a preventive measure.
