Ductless Fume Hoods — No Ductwork Required
Ductless fume hoods (also called filtered or recirculating hoods) use activated carbon and/or HEPA filters to capture chemical vapors and particulates, then return clean air to the room. They require no connection to building ductwork — just standard electrical power. This makes them portable, fast to install, and significantly cheaper than ducted alternatives.
The key limitation: ductless hoods only protect against chemicals their filters are designed to capture. They are NOT suitable for all chemical work. Labs USA helps you evaluate whether ductless is appropriate for your specific chemical list.
When Ductless Works — and When It Doesn’t
✅ Good For
- Organic solvents (acetone, ethanol, methanol, IPA)
- Formaldehyde / formalin (histology)
- Weighing powders and particulates (with HEPA)
- Teaching labs with controlled chemical lists
- Labs without HVAC capacity for ducted hoods
- Temporary or portable lab setups
❌ Not For
- Strong mineral acids at high concentrations
- Mercury and heavy metal vapors
- Unknown or variable chemical mixtures
- Carbon monoxide and other small molecules
- Large-volume solvent evaporation
- Any work requiring 100% vapor removal
Frequently Asked Questions
How often do ductless fume hood filters need replacing?
Filter life depends on chemical type, concentration, and usage hours. Activated carbon filters typically last 6–18 months for moderate use. Manufacturers provide filter saturation indicators and/or electronic monitoring. Labs USA specifies hoods with filter monitoring systems.
Are ductless fume hoods OSHA compliant?
OSHA does not prohibit ductless hoods, but they must provide adequate protection for the specific chemicals being used. ANSI Z9.5 provides guidance on ductless hood selection. The key is matching the filter type to your chemical list. Labs USA helps you document compliance.
How much does a ductless fume hood cost?
Ductless hoods range from $2,000 to $8,000 depending on size and filtration. Ongoing filter replacement costs $300–$800/year. Even with filter costs, total cost of ownership is lower than ducted hoods (which require ductwork, HVAC modifications, and higher energy costs).
