Work Surfaces

Stainless steel countertops are preferred for PFAS sample preparation areas. Epoxy resin surfaces are acceptable for general PFAS lab areas (not in direct contact with samples during prep) since epoxy formulations typically do not contain fluorinated compounds — but verify with the manufacturer.

Avoid in PFAS areas: Phenolic surfaces (check manufacturer PFAS content declarations), laminate surfaces (adhesives may contain PFAS), and any surface treated with water-repellent or stain-resistant coatings.

Fume Hoods

PFAS sample preparation typically involves methanol and solid-phase extraction (SPE) — not heavy acid work. However, fume hoods may still be needed for solvent handling and reagent preparation.

Sinks and Plumbing

Stainless steel laboratory sinks are appropriate for PFAS areas. All plumbing connections should use stainless steel fittings — no PTFE tape on threaded connections in the PFAS zone. Use anaerobic thread sealant or metal-to-metal compression fittings instead.

  • Controlled access: Limit entry to trained personnel wearing PFAS-free PPE
  • No carpeting: Hard flooring only — carpet treatments often contain PFAS
  • Dedicated glassware: PFAS-only glassware that never contacts other lab chemicals
  • Sample flow: One-directional sample movement from receiving → prep → analysis
