The Situation

SpaceX operates a large manufacturing campus in Bastrop, Texas. Manufacturing at that scale consumes and discharges a great deal of water, and water that supports industrial processes has to be tested continuously: incoming supply, treated process water, and effluent all need routine analytical work if the plant is going to stay in specification and in compliance.

That work needs a real laboratory. Water treatment testing is not a single instrument on a bench. The Solution

Labs USA specified and supplied the complete laboratory interior as a single package, laid out wall by wall and island by island so every component reconciled with the ones next to it before anything was manufactured.

Two six foot bypass fume hoods anchor the chemical handling wall. A bypass design keeps face velocity stable as the sash moves, rather than letting airflow spike when the sash is lowered, which matters in a lab where the sash position changes constantly through a shift. Each hood arrived prewired and preplumbed with light and blower switches, duplex receptacles, a gooseneck faucet, an epoxy work surface with cup sinks, and an airflow monitor so the operator can see that the hood is actually working rather than assuming it is. Flammable storage cabinets sit beneath, so solvents are stored where they are used, in cabinets built for the purpose.

The centre of the room is island casework: base cabinet runs combining drawer, door, and full width drawer units, topped with one inch epoxy resin countertops with a four inch applied curb and beveled edges. Epoxy resin is the right surface for water chemistry because it does not stain, swell, or degrade under acids, solvents, and constant wet work, and it can be cut and sealed into continuous runs with cup sinks and service holes.

Services reach the islands through vertical service chases with double gang, double face electrical pedestals, so power arrives at the work surface where instruments sit instead of trailing across the floor. Four source capture extraction hoods were included at the island stations, giving targeted capture at points where vapors are released without enclosing the whole bench.

A dedicated epoxy resin balance table was supplied for gravimetric work, with two and a half inch thick slabs, a galvanized steel lateral support beam, and rubberized vibration reduction foot pads. Weighing to analytical resolution on a shared bench is unreliable because everything else in the room transmits through the structure.
