Flow Science has become very busy in 2020 building containment enclosure for virus research or a company called Perkin and Elmer a leading instrument manufacturer globally.

They have about three thousand employees and they do a fine job. They make a biocontainment enclosure platform that’s known as the Janice G3. This particular product, the Janice Three, is an automated robot sized liquid handler that can be inside of a Flow Science enclosure. The Perkin Elmer Jannis Three works on a ninety six well plate format, which means that they’re putting sample trays inside this unit and they’re using the Jannis three to load different reagents or biochemicals into the well placed for further analysis. 

It’s a useful diagnostic tool for covid-19 and business has exploded this year, providing this type biosafety cabinet for virus research of automated liquid handler so that people can do rapid diagnostics of individual samples and they can do them all day long. They need to have containment for this. In some cases, there may be infectious agents in the individual samples could be covid. And then also, you know, they’re going to want to test some other fumes in biological enclosure.

They’re designing a cardiovascular stint that can be up to nine feet long. They’re doing a stint as EMT,  so that has a long, long tube and that’s why that height was required, is to have an enclosure that’s a clean room that because it’s super narrow for when that goes into the body.

So the difference between aseptic and non sterile is what we discussed with them. Do they truly need aseptic? And that’s where we get into the idea of cleanliness.

The Johnson and Johnson Company, Ethicon. Medtronic  have been doing stent research and they would go almost to they’ve had open face, but they built it custom once that they were building their long stents on the inside of this thing. If a client needs true, true, aseptic and sterile and we can design and we can provide true, sterile, aseptic.

Depending on how much filtration it takes some real good questions. Much of that had been university oriented. And again, a lot of it was for rapid diagnostic of covid test they were using it to keep their enrollment together.hoo

The solution we came up with for Perkin, Elmer, was this type of enclosure with sliding glass doors on the front. The unit sits inside. We’re able to bring in unit directional air negative pressure, which means we’re pulling the air in protecting the operator and also protecting the laboratory, and then we’re filtering out through a double or dual HEPA filter bank that’s up top here. And we’ve been quite busy with this particular biological enclosure product line.

We also go over the important test protocols. This particular type of biocontainment enclosure is subject to  Ashleigh, 110 testing. Team Hoods could also do a similar type of work. We restate the actual test performance that we’re able to achieve here. It’s important from a safety standpoint to have less than 50 parts per billion of exposure. The test material, is a sulfur hexafluoride. It’s used as a placebo or a surrogate in the testing. And our results were for containment enclosure for virus research we’re very, very good. 

We passed and this design complies with the biosafety cabinet for virus research requirement. Flow Science has sold many containment enclosures for this application 2020. Predominantly the clients were universities which are teaching universities. And they needed to get the students back to class. So some of the universities were buying from Furqan Alber. They needed to have one additional level of protection beyond the gowns and the masks for their robot operators.

So they got these kits and that way they were able to process literally hundreds of tests per day to be able to clear the college students to go back to class or to go into some type of quarantine if they tested positive. As we all know, and someday will remember, the Covid 19 pandemic is driving vaccine research absolutely wild. Clients are utilizing the safety enclosures around other equipment to be able to do their vaccine research.

So we provide the support but this would actually be the human machine interface from Perkin Elmer to control the actual robot. it’s cabled and we accommodate the cables, and that’s something that went into the design. Flow Science can accommodate a keyboard.

As a lab design company, Labs USA, offers solutions centered around cost avoidance. Sometimes a better solution upfront saves costs over the life of the lab.

University of North Carolina was building a containment suite and they were doing something with nanotechnology and engineered materials and they had fume hoods designed. They realized that they were building the lab with the wrong thing. So they ended up saving a whole lot of energy. A common process step with a pharmaceutical after the API, the active pharmaceutical ingredient is prepared. Normally, most drug production requires drying techniques. So they still got a high moisture content after making the API. And a couple of ways to do that would be with a rotary evaporator. Another method would be to use a spray dryer and the little instrument that is in the in the top left circle is a rotary evaporator and a spray dryer to the lower right. Labs USA and Flow Science have containment application history and experience with enclosing and containing these.

When you’re doing rotary evaporation or when you’re doing spray drying, what you’re doing is you’re driving off the moisture content that’s in the powder.  It’s a refinement step to that powder. As you refine the powder, you’re creating a lot more surface area with the powder. So as you continue through the process, you know, you’re actually increasing the potency and the toxicity of the powder. So when they get to their rendering, you’ve got a highly toxic material and that’s the need for containment.

We are experts in containment for spray drying and rotary evaporation. If a client has somebody says, Buki, you know to enclose a rotary evaporator. We’ve got solutions we see them come up all the time.

The containment example that’s in the middle of this bulletin is a hybrid type enclosure. Again, we’ve got the glove panel. The material that they were working with here had  an OEL that was in the nanogram levels of containment requirement. In this case, we have closed the entire spray dryer instrument to Buki, spray dryer completely inside the enclosure. And then they have some prep smeary for preparation and some other laboratory tools and supplies in there. They can run through a complete spray drying routine and they can do it safely.
